Related news edit

A useful tool is to include a selection of recent articles that relate to the new one. This is called Related news.

This is the template that you would use:

Brown supported Iraq war to save job edit

As you know every Wikinewsie -including myself- gets upset about NPOV disputes. We all have a right to our opinion but in this case of a dispute we could discuss it on the talk page or just take away the tag and make it more NPOV. Well, the former title Scared Brown supported Iraq war to save job was very POV. Doldrums only commented about the title so I'm sure that it can be published. On talk pages or discussion pages, we don't delete things, they are archived. There's no shame in asking assistance; just leave them there, they will be archived in time. Don't erase them!
Just a question: Are you on another wiki too?
And some advice: if you have a specific interest or something you want to share, you might want to consider categorising you userpage: Category:User categories.

post-publish changes edit

hi, Fentonrobb and welcome to wikinews. i hope u like the place. i just wanted to let u know that Wikinews articles shouldn't be updated with new information once they are published, especially once they remain published for roughly a couple of days. as Wikinews:What Wikinews is not points out, Wikinews articles are not works in progress, they are meant to be historical documents reporting information as known at the time of publishing. to report new developments in a story, just create a new article to report it, and include a link to the old one in the newly created article as related news. cheers!  — Doldrums(talk) 12:50, 21 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

in response to your clarifications on my talk page, I moved the page, feel free to do so yourself anytime when you feel you've got it right; I wasn't sure so I moved it to a more general title, but since you assured me he said Britain, I moved again.

No problem you can ask me anything. Your doing a great job here I really like your work, also the continued reporting on ongoing matters. I inserted a header in the space article, maybe that can help when the article is getting too large.

Well I was thinking about it today, that indeed, we do have a print version, but we can develop the articles anyway. But I guess if newspapers keep writing about it, it's really better to write a new article, e.g. a background article / in-depth report, or just a new article describing the new reactions. Try to avoid it as much as possible, it's the natural way of working: if it keeps coming up in the media, then we should have a new article about it with todays date, not just keep adding stuff on an old article that disappears on the main page after 3 days.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 15:52, 23 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi there!

I've seen you around, and I've seen some of your comments that reflect the self-doubt we all have working on the project, more commonly known as asking yourself "Am I doing this right?"

Well, the answer is that you both are and you aren't. The attention to detail that you put into stories is pretty much faultless, but you seem stuck with the encyclopedic approach of making things comprehensive. Wikinews can be messy, and things - to some extent - can be left that way.

If I take as an example your coverage of the US "interest in space" story, hindsight tells me that you should have done a 3-4 paragraph short story and spent the next few days collecting the responses to do a new story. If you do something like that you're looking at having double-lead material without putting any more effort in than you did for the one story.

If you have a situation like that again where followup/reaction information will come in over a period of days then collect it all into a followup story. Done right you'll have lead or featured material and you'll spend no more time on it than you do trying to keep one story comprehensive. --Brian McNeil / talk 19:23, 23 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

World health check article edit

hi Fentonrobb, absolutely no apologies necessary. i appreciate ur attempts to liven up articles and make them interesting to read. that is a difficult jon to do since our Wikinews:Content guidelines and policies mean that we cannot put opinion or editorial analysis in the article - everything in an article must be sourced, and be neutrally presented.

the use of the "health check" metaphor, if sourced, is perfectly acceptable as long as it is attributed and contrary views, if any, are also presented. but the metaphor cannot be used unsourced, because it would be the Wikinews editor's "commentary" or opinion on the subject. in this case, "health" is unattributed in the title, it'd be better if it read something like London Zoological Society reports on health of planet Earth released. in the article, some background info and some other views on the subject would also be nice, and will go some way to make it WN:NPOV.

is not deleted, merely renamed to London Zoological Society reports on health of planet Earth by urself. are u speaking of another article perhaps?

i am sorry u feel ur efforts on Wikinews are not valued, but such is not the case. Wikinews welcomes all contributors. do remember that as in any Wiki, other contributors do get involved in editing articles started by you, perhaps pointing out what they see as problems or mistakes in it. this criticism is not meant to be personal or to belittle, merely a way to address the problems that every article, even those written by the most experienced contributors usually have.

Once again, I thought you made a little error, and you didn't... sorry for that, won't happen again...
As for reverting, it's quite simple; you can go to the page's history, click the time of the version you want to revert to and click save (ignoring the warning), or you can copy text from it into the current version (what I just did at your request).
As for the images, they're from w:Influenza. I generally look there and in Commons for related images, transfer images to commons where necessary and then illustrate the article if possible.

I would personally say don't copy the image or text directly across, as that risks copyright violations (copyvios). However, there is nothing wrong with paraphrasing an article on another website, as long as it is not a direct copy and that you correctly add new information and cite the sources. --Skenmy(tcwi) 17:52, 29 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

questions in article titles edit

are not a good thing on wikinews. Wikinews:Content guidelines require us to refrain from any speculating, commenting or offering opinions on the events we report. while we can report "X disagrees with Y on issue Z", or "X says W", "X leaves Y's government" and "Y fires X", we should not be saying "X planning to part ways from Y?" since that wld be speculation. if such speculation is made by notable people, it can be reported as speculation, attributing the comments to the people who make them. unattributed speculation as the headline is not ok.  — Doldrums(talk) 11:03, 6 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Just a reminder that to include an image at wikinews, it either has to be uploaded locally or at commons:. Images at wikipedia might as well not exsist as far as transcluding them here. (However if they're at commons, we can have them both here, and at wikipedia, and everywhere listed here. quotes edit

looks like i never got around to replying to ur question. sorry! here's the list of citation templates used on wikinews. the only offline source template is {{apasource}}. u can also take a look at Wikipedia's list of templates. if any of those are useful, they can easily be imported here. using the APA template or the 'pedia ones (after importing them) is just the same as using the usual {{source}} template.

hope this helps, if u need any assistence with this, do let me know. don't worry about not quickly getting a hang of the w:Wiki markup or other intricacies of the w:Mediawiki software, there're plenty of people u can ask for help (some may reply rather late, though :)). after all, the reason Wikis are designed for collaborative work is so that people with different skills can come together and pool their expertise. best,  — Doldrums(talk) 06:06, 13 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
