Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

OR
editHi. I notice you've started an article, which appears to be intended as original reporting. OR is usually the most challenging form of reportage we do here; it requires lots of documentation, and it's best to have experience writing for en.wn first (both so you know the ropes and so we know you). Photo essays can be easier, though they do require some documentation (see for example WorldPride London 2012: In pictures). You should also take a look at WN:PILLARS. --Pi zero (talk) 10:58, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- Hi again. Unfortunately, I don't think the article passes the car-crash test. (I could wish I'd anticipated this possible difficulty when writing the review comments for my first review, but alas I didn't.) Review comments. --Pi zero (talk) 03:55, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for uploading an image to Wikinews. However, I notice that the image in question, File:ListOfFoodToBuyIPU2014 05 25 12.29.28.png, is licensed under a non-commercial license. If this is your own work, please use a freer license. I recommend using {{cc-by-sa-3.0}}. A good writeup of why non-commercial licenses are discouraged on Wikimedia projects can be found at c:Commons:Licensing/Justifications. Microchip08 (talk) 11:36, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
First attempt
editHi and welcome to English Wikinews!! I read your first contribution here.....a cute effort. I'm not certain, but I dont think you meant that to be a serious news article, although there's no crime in just messing around to get a hang of things here! Have you considered setting up a Sandbox to do just that? Here....I'll create one for you! User :Dorey Sébastien/sandbox Just go there and you can experiment all you want with our tools! Let me know if I can help with articles! --Bddpaux (talk) 16:58, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

Your picnic article
editYou might want to consider moving it over to your sandbox (see above)......just cut and paste everything over there.....it will allow you time to play around with your wording. Also, please consider: this is an international news site......it takes a very resilient and generally humble person to slog through the learning curve here. You can do it! Was there anything particularly newsworthy about the picnic/walk/day/event? As I like to say: "Would a school teacher in Manila want to read this? What about a truck driver from Dallas, Texas?" if you can't imagine those people wanting to read it, it might not be newsworthy.....but work it up and submit it. Also, know when it's time to walk away from an article....you're not married to it! It's not your child! It's just an article.....sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Let me know if I can help you. --Bddpaux (talk) 18:59, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
