Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome, Delexmer! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Guns article
editDelexmer,
The article is nowhere near ready for submission. First, the headline carries a "Point of View", whereas Wikinews prides itself in being neutral and lives by the same "Non Point of Vew," or NPOV, philosophy as Wikipedia. Second, you don't have a clear lead. About the lead, did LCAV just release this information recently or did you dig it up? The time element is not at all clear but it is a basic point of the news. Third, Do you have anything current event to link this data to? The ones you produce are from March. You always need currency. Finally, for now, I don't see your original sources; who did you interview? Please don't submit articles so quickly before looking over them carefully for basic problems. Were you going to have an infographic for this article? These ar just some of the questions I have. Crtew (talk) 19:09, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
Eek, I should have said above that I pulled the article from review.Crtew (talk) 19:28, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
Horses
editDelexmer,
Just skimmed the first draft. You need a straight lead about the roster of the horses for the Kentucky Derby, May 4, "being determined." I'm not sure how the roster is determined, and I bet most readers don't know either. You could clarify. Do any of the horses have a good back story? Is one more popular than others? Who is favored? Who has the pedegree? These are just some questions that in the past have produced a lead. Are all the horses determined or are there still more to come? If more, then explain how and when.Crtew (talk) 19:21, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
The article also has two glaring problems: First, the headline doesn't pull people in, and don't forget this is international. Rename. Second, I don't see any sources for verification. Wikinews requires at least two sources for this purpose.Crtew (talk)
Based on your knowledge of horses, you should have some sources to interview about the line up.Crtew (talk) 19:30, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
