This image [1] requires a source. If a source is not located, it will be deleted. It may also be copyvio. DragonFire1024 20:08, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Fixed, sorry bout that --Dark Squall 20:13, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately the image had to be deleted becuase it is copyvio and cannot be used without written permission from the site.

Here is their rules for images. Read Section 4:

"4.1 All copyright, trade marks and all other intellectual property rights in all material or content supplied as part of the Sky Site shall remain at all times vested in Us or Our licensors. You are permitted to use this material or content only as expressly authorised in writing by Us or Our licensors. You will not, and You will not assist or facilitate any third party to, copy, reproduce, transmit, distribute, frame, commercially exploit or create derivative works of such material or content. MSN and the MSN Logo are registered trademarks or trademarks of Microsoft Corporation in the United States and/or other countries and are used under license from Microsoft." DragonFire1024 20:19, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

All right, fair enough. I figured it might not be allowed, as they are a news competor, but what better way to find out than trying. If i find a picture which is free for download (i.e a wallpaper) and i edit it for here, would i be allowed to do that without infringing on copyright laws? otherwise i can think of no other way of getting soccer pictures, as i live way too far away to take them myself. Also, are team logos allowed to be used?Dark Squall 02:36, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

If the images are from a News Site you have to check their privacy policies or rules etc usually at the bottom of the pages. If the image is copyright, then NO you cannot alter, change or make and differences to any copyrighted image. The best way to tell if an image can be used on Wikinews is to check the copyright. Images from Flikr are usually published with a Creative Commons License which allow them to be used in some cases, on Wikinews as long as the source and or author of the image is mentioned. Team logos, and as well as company logos ARE allowed on Wikinews, but only Wikinews. The logos MUST come from the main site of the team or the company and those also CANNOT be altered. If you want to use a logo you can use the {{logo}} template when uploading. DragonFire1024 18:35, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Soccer/Football/whatever you want to call it portal

edit
That's great. Basically what needs to be done there (besides the obvious writing of stories) is the current matches needs to be updated. The current matches need to be on Portal:Football/Fixtures/2007/February/24 which will be automaticlly included in the portal (replace with whatever day the match is on) On a day with no games, that page should look like Portal:Football/Fixtures/2006/February/24 (It should automatically do that now), and on a day with matches it should look like Portal:Football/Fixtures/2006/February/12. Note none of this is set in stone, so if you think it would be better some other way, feel free to experiment. Bawolff 20:50, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I saw the new one you created. Looks great, a couple things though:
  • Its currently 2007 not 2006
  • for subsections should use descending header levels (four equal signs)
  • Should use link in date title thing (See the change I made) This makes it easier if your going through the archives.

Bawolff 05:33, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Alright, thanks for the heads up, ill make sure i follow those guidlines. I did todays, theres no games, but all the outlines have been followed.Dark Squall 15:59, 26 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

{{foo}} means to include stuff from other pages. So to edit the lead, edit Template:Football main leads. Happy editing Bawolff 00:44, 3 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sorry to keep bothering you with image stuff (I'm like a real live version of orphanbot on 'pedia  ), could yopu put an image copyright tag on Image:Football Portal Banner.jpg? (like {{pd image}}). Thanks Bawolff 05:22, 11 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Also don't forget to click on an image on wikipedia, to go to the image page, as they are usually scaled down on the article. (example: 1 vs 2) Bawolff 05:30, 11 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ok, ill take care of that stuff. I didnt grab the big images because i didnt feel id need something that large, but it makes sense just in case others need the big ones.—Dark Squall 01:11, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I, Thunderhead hereby award Dark Squall a barnstar for achievements in sports articles. Keep up the wonderful work. Thunderhead - (talk) 01:49, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! jeeze ive only been here like a week :D thanks alot for the recognition, it means alot.Dark Squall 01:50, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

You deserve it! Please keep up the good work. --Thunderhead - (talk) 01:54, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • I'm with Thunderhead on this one. He may be one of our younger contributors, but he's got a good eye. Contributions to sports are very much appreciated and you should ignore the odd trolling that suggests we change the site name to wikifootball. However, interact a bit more with the community. I know your articles turn up on the front page but is there a link to the Sports portal - a section of the wiki you could effectively adopt? We seem to have a few sports contributors at the moment with NHL articles as well as soccer, if all these budding sports writers can coordinate we'll get mirrored by somewhere that is listed in Google news.
So, keep up the good work and talk to more people who do sports stuff, I think you guys could make that one of the best parts of the wiki. --Brian McNeil / talk 00:02, 10 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sounds great, i'll definately look at coordinating with others to make the sports area of Wikipedia as great as possible :)Dark Squall 15:51, 10 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

you've been doing an excellent job so far. Bawolff 05:33, 11 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Watch out for things like the NHL articles and try and get the contributors to work together on Portal:Sports to set up match reports and fixtures listings. You can use the dynamic boxes like for old news on the main page. I believe we have some contributors who also do cricket articles. If you need help from any of us non-sports writers then just ask on the water cooler.
As to Belgium, I've been here about 10 or so years, I'm halfway between Brussels and Leuven in the Flemish part of the country and it is a nice place. --Brian McNeil / talk 08:44, 11 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sport v Sports

edit

The cats system uses sports rather than sport. Could you add sports in future I know it grates as an uneeded plural but...--Irate 12:42, 11 March 2007 (UTC) Yeah, i have to remember to do that. I never actually add categories to anything, i simply copy and paste. Someone put "Sport" one of my articles and since i keep copying and pasting i forget to change it. Anyways, ill make sure i look for that, thanksDark Squall 20:22, 11 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

article sources

edit

hi Dark Squall, that's a lot of work you've done on Wikinews in your first month here. i hope to see much more to come :)

regarding the Afghan bombing article, i just wanted to note that using copies of a single wire report published by different publishers does not meet the multiple sources requirement very well. much better to use independently sourced reports. i've since then added another source to the article. best –Doldrums(talk) 04:40, 13 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews:Sports coverage

edit

I've added a project page, Wikinews:Sports coverage. Feel free to expand and adopt it, I'd like to have a place where our (excellent) sports contributors can coordinate. When MrMiscellaneous did this and got accreditation he got free access to hockey matches - something to shoot for. :) --Brian McNeil / talk 19:48, 13 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Good idea, i posted my name up there. I would love to help with the overall sports coverage on this sight, but for now i am focusing completely on the football portal. Once im done the project i am currently working on, updating will be easy for me, so I'll be able to help with other things.—Dark Squall 20:01, 13 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I was thinking that your experience with doing the Football portal would transfer well to the sports portal. A little cooperation and coordination will see other people helping you with stuff and vice-versa. I know you can't do everything at once, but putting up that you're doing the Football portal will be encouraging to other sports writers, they'll see their coverage is welcome and be able to learn from your experiences. I'm off to see if I can find more people to sign up on the page,--Brian McNeil / talk 20:16, 13 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

WikiCast.

edit

Hi,

I note you are associated with the Football and devloping sports

portal here.

Would you be willing to consider doing a football (soccer) related podcast or programme for 'WikiCast - The free content broadcast' at some point?

In addition, if WikiCast could get someone to do actual on the ground coverage of non-leauge football (like AFC Wimbledon) with commentaries even better.

WikiCast being free content can't obviously do 'live' coverage of the FA Divisons or Premership sadly, but presumably Wikinews style reporting is possible..

Does a podcast entitled 'Two Halves' sound like something you would be interested in?

ShakespeareFan00 21:17, 13 March 2007 (UTC) Reply

Are you fricken serious!? that sounds so cool! lol, sorry, i did not even know this was possible. I would love to do this, but unfortunately i have no recording equipment at this time. In the future, i will definately think about it however, and I thank you for asking me.—Dark Squall 21:51, 13 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

RE: Category bar

edit

If I understand what you mean, there has to be at least the date category and the published category for the story to appear on the main page, and Mediawiki does not allow that to be hidden, as unfortunante as that is =P.  Thunderhead  ►  01:07, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Darn, oh well, what im making are subpages in the Football portal. The portal itself does not have the category bar, but the new page does, and it really takes away from the page. But if nothing can be done, then nothing can be done and ill leave it—Dark Squall 01:09, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Oh wait, now i know what your talking about. Short answer, no unless you want it just for you personally, long answer, maybe but you'd have to have a really good reason. Bawolff 01:17, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Actually now i'm not sure if this is something different then what you were talking to me about on my talk page. Did you mean ToC here, or the bar at the bottom that lists categories the page is in. Bawolff 01:44, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, i meant table of contents, but not on this page. the thing you suggested worked, it is in the football portal. Thank you for your help—Dark Squall 01:45, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

If it's the ToC, you can type __NOTOC__ to remove it.  Thunderhead  ►  01:54, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks guys, and sorry for confusing both of you, i'm not familiar with all the lingo yet, gettin used to it though. If you guys havent checked out what im doing with the football portal, please do n tell me what you think, thanks—Dark Squall 01:55, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think it looks very good. Only problem i possibly see so far is we might have a copyright issue with using logo's in the header. (I'm unsure about that though, so I could be wrong). Bawolff 02:26, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'll look into it.  Thunderhead  ►  02:27, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I hope its ok, the logos arent altered themselves, they are just put in another image, but who knows with crazy copyright stuff. Otherwise i could use the regular banner and just add logos above the top stories area.Dark Squall 02:30, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Now that i think of it, I think its okay. I'm probably just getting parinoid. I know its against policy on wikipedia, but i think that we're allowed to if we want to. Bawolff 02:33, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yep. Wikinews is indeed allowed to.  Thunderhead  ►  02:34, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Out of curiosity, where did you look that up? Bawolff 02:39, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
