Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies
|
Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

How do I make my article "stylish" without feeling like it is complicated?
edit{{helpme}}
Hi. I am asking this because I am wondering if the way to make your article "stylish" was complicated. I am very worried due to the fact I could be spending hours on one article just to make it stylish.
Sorry if this is a ridiculous question, but do you know how this feature works?
Thanks.

- Hi. I'm not sure what you mean by "stylish", but it sounds superficial. The problems with your current article, Wikipedia unfairly blocks users, aren't superficial. They have to do with what we mean on Wikinews by "newsworthy", "neutral", and "verifiable". Even the business about picking a focus isn't what I'd call "stylish" — once you have a focus, how you write the article around the focus is "style" (though not necessarily superficial style), but if you don't have a focus that's a matter of newsworthiness. --Pi zero (talk) 23:06, 9 July 2014 (UTC)
- What I mean by "stylish" is how to get styles on the page. One of the things says that you need a style on the page, but I don't want to have to focus on one page for an hour. That is why I asked this question.
- Thanks for replying though, btw.
- I'm not sure what says something about needing a style on the page. It doesn't sound familiar to me. Perhaps a misunderstanding. --Pi zero (talk) 23:34, 9 July 2014 (UTC)
- Btw, the comments pages are for discussing the topic of an article after it's published, and also (thanks to the wiki software, which is very clumsy for most purposes other than writing an encyclopedia) the comments page have to be of a very precise format in order for the software to handle them correctly. So for both of those reasons, we don't allow them to be created for an unpublished article. The collaboration page (a.k.a. talk page) of an article is for discussing issues with the way it's written. --Pi zero (talk) 23:37, 9 July 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks Pi. Also, I thanked you for putting in the correct source in my Wikipedia unfairly blocks users article. I could not get to that as I had the review notes to focus on. By the way, another review of the article is awaiting.
