Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

I reviewed your article. Could you add a bit more so it can be published? Thanks, —Mikemoral♪♫ 01:10, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
I closed your request as not successful. Don't let it get you down though; your work in Wikinews is very appreciated, and for sure you will become a reviewer in the near future. Regards, Diego Grez return fire 15:40, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
- No problem, there's always next time :). Thanks, Bobby122 Contact Me (C) 15:42, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
Article updates
editGoing from one dead, to ten dead is - in my mind - new news. That is, the update merits a new article.
Remember, Wikinews, not Wikipedia. Our articles are not works in progress, but a record of what was known at the time. Yes, there's the 24-48 hr rule for additional info. But, 10x the casualties qualifies as a new enough development to create a new article.
In any case, your enthusiasm is greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work and strive to learn from some of the 'ruthless' copyediting. --Brian McNeil / talk 07:05, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the information, will remember for next time. Bobby122 Contact Me (C) 21:57, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
Water cooler thread
editUnfortunately, I am not who you need for this. I have posted a request at WN:Water cooler/assistance#Cholera spreads to Port-au-Prince, five cases reported. --Pi zero (talk) 21:08, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks will keep an eye on it. Bobby122 Contact Me (C) 21:27, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
Reviewer
editYou're now a reviewer, congrats! Here's the standard 'you're now a reviewer' template:
I have promoted you to the Wikinews:Reviewer class, entrusting you with the ability to mark revisions of articles as sighted (review). Please take a moment to read:
- Wikinews:Flagged revisions
- Wikinews:Reviewing articles
- {{Peer review}}
- {{Review}}
- Reviewed article version
- Flagged Revisions extension information, on MediaWiki
You are welcome to use {{User Wikinews reviewer}}.
If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask for help on my talk page, and thank you for contributing to Wikinews! Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 23:26, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
Post-publish sighting
editHi, congrats on getting reviewer.
Just as a FYI, all edits post-publish need manually re-sighted. I've done so for your tweaks to the organ donor jet crash, you could've sighted that one yourself.
Where you need to leave it to someone else is if you've added an additional source and/or substantially expanded an article. If you're unsure, pop into IRC and ask. --Brian McNeil / talk 11:18, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
- I think Bobby's post-publication actions were correct. (Bobby122, congrats on reviewer!) Two of the three edits were too substantive to self-sight.
- I'm wondering about the pre-publish "additional source for additional confirmation" edit, but the place for that is article talk. --Pi zero (talk) 12:43, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
- There was extra info introduced, so self-sighting would have been somewhat naughty. I'm very pleased to see in the edit history that you've picked up on pleonasm, though. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 12:54, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the congrats everyone! I added some content with some of the edits, which I thought it went against WN:ARCHIVE so I didn't self sight. Bobby122 Contact Me (C) 16:50, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

editOn Southwest Airlines flight diverts due to 'rapid decompression in the cabin', I've posted a comment on the talk page. If you can respond with the source of the quote, it's otherwise ready for approval. —Tom Morris (talk) 08:15, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

editNote! Your privileges on English Wikinews have been reduced.
- Under the Privilege expiry policy (enacted October 13, 2012) the rights held by your user account have been reduced due to inactivity, or lack of privilege use. You can view your user rights log here.
- Point 4 of the Privilege expiry policy provides for fast-tracking reacquisition of privileges. We all understand that real-life commitments can severely curtail the level of commitment you can give to Wikinews; the privilege reduction is in no way intended as a reflection on your past work, or to imply you are unwelcome. The aim in curtailing privileges is to address security risks, and concern that a long period of inactivity means you may not be up-to-date with current policy and practices.
