Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

United States portal

edit

Hey. Just a heads up: If you are working on a portal, it needs to be a continental one, not a national one like the United States. It would also be useful, if working on a continental portal for possible replication across the whole project, if you could submit and get published at least one article a day that falls into the continental portal to assist in demonstrating usability for it. Repeating a theme elsewhere, unless we have regular, daily content in a portal area, there is no reason to create a software backend for it. --LauraHale (talk) 12:28, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

ok I have test a new set of codes in sandbox for North America and so it support lead to include new if I could work on the sandbox and ask fro your approval I could put it into the page and then add leads to it Bluesky (talk) 12:30, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Just as a for the record, you are unlikely to get any real support project wise for what is going on. Adminstrators will have to review any and all edits for what you are doing. This will eat up a lot of time and resources, while not in any way demonstrating value to the community. If you have chosen North America as your continent of choice, please provide a list of North American continental template related pages you plan to edit. Anything outside of clearly defined North American template pages will likely not be accepted in terms of approving edits. You will need to be very clear on what those outside pages are and why you need to edit them. At the same time that you are doing this, we also ask that you contribute an article a day about the topic you are working on portal wise. --LauraHale (talk) 12:45, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
ok could I update the template it useing so it shows leads please Bluesky (talk) 12:46, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Create all templates on your userspace please? You are creating a model, not working on improving portals across the whole project at all. Also, before you start doing much else, please submit an article about the continent you are going to be working on. Doing this will demonstrate to the community that you understand what we are about and how we work. Once you have done that, it should really aid in your developing a portal. --LauraHale (talk) 12:55, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
ok what should I write about for North America Bluesky (talk) 12:56, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
The Rockford Icehogs? There is a lot of news. Up to you. --LauraHale (talk) 13:01, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
can I search for news and see if It on here but I won't copy the words I find something to write on Bluesky (talk) 13:06, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
can I write bout North Korea getting ready to attact America Bluesky (talk) 13:08, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
how do I create it in my user space Bluesky (talk) 12:58, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Please figure it out. Until you do, please do not make any edits on any template pages or portal pages. Rather than reviewing articles or writing articles, I am dealing with non-content pages. This is not Wikipedia. Content production matters more than this non-content stuff. --LauraHale (talk) 13:01, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
what do you mean by review articles or writing articles and do you mean by user space like in sandbox Bluesky (talk) 13:02, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Pardon my breaking in to this discussion.
Bluesky, you should understand what this project is, and basic things like userspace, before trying to rewrite portals. To do stuff like that properly you really need to understand what we do and why we do it, and how the technical stuff works. The what-this-project-is stuff, you can get a start on from the {{Howdy}} template at the top of this page, and WN:Pillars of Wikinews writing. The technical stuff about templates and userspace and such actually is similar on Wikinews versus Wikipedia, at least in its basics, and you can find help pages about it at Wikipedia. --Pi zero (talk) 13:13, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

North Korea getting ready to attack North America

edit

It is becoming from North Korea getting ready to attack North America that you are not interested in creating content, learning our local rules, trying to publish according our guidelines. The referencing part is clearly discussed in the pages you have been directed at and in the examples you were requested to look at. If you continue with this behavior, you risk being blocked. Wikinews is fundamentally about content creation. Trolling and eating limiting community resources is not acceptable. --LauraHale (talk) 21:01, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

I am interested I just need help to know where I can add mroe information because the rules or one of them are not to copy from other sites but I am using them as a way to write but not copying them by re writing the news article I had written Bluesky (talk) 21:05, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Block

edit

Hello. You have been blocked for 24 hours to prevent you from editing. You were unable to contribute content, and, more importantly, you were specifically blocked for editing on the template space. This was not in line with the restrictions under which you were placed. The page was deleted. When the block expires, should you return to editing templates on the template namespace, your next block will be increased in time. --LauraHale (talk) 10:00, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

ok but I created the template as a sandbox I thought we were aloud to create sandbox not just under my user space but sorry Bluesky (talk) 10:01, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
You were told all templates needed to be created on your user space. It was explained to you that every one of your edits needs to be approved by an administrator. The next edit you make related to portals that is not a North American portal on your user space will lead to a week long block. If it looks like you are using an IP address to circumvent the block, both accounts will be blocked for a week. Portals drain administrator time and we currently have several articles to review, that we cannot if we are busy having to watch every edit you make. --LauraHale (talk) 10:08, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • I have created this page, which uses a userspace template to illustrate how you can build a demo of what you would like to see implemented at Wikinews.
Please stop asking for administrative assistance, and ignoring requests to limit the scope of changes you are making; this is why I've not unblocked you, but as I agree to a limited extent with what you purport to have as a goal, I have taken the first steps in allowing you to set up a "demo" of what you want.
This should involve absolutely no changes whatsoever of templates used in the main, or portal, namespaces. As I've already tried to impart, where certain pages have custom css or js, please identify what you need transferred, and how it might need edited.
Previously, we have had some very helpful people who've done little in the way of content. But, you can't make technical changes without an awareness of the contribution side of things.
If what you want works on one continent, it'd be rolled out. Then, and I hope this is the last time I have to say this - and only then, could we realistically start looking at increasing the contributors working on a single country portal. it might-well not be the United States where the project gains traction, it might-well be Australia, India or New Zealand. --Brian McNeil / talk 22:29, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
ok I have learned to use my userspace. So what do I do I understand I demo with the template you created for me what can I do so I can test changed to the whole template like you said to test what I like to do and so I can add my userspace so that it says user:bluesky/continent or country or date and test it Bluesky (talk) 11:15, 6 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Further misbehavior was to result in block with increasing duration. I've given you a one-week block. You submitted your article for review and then added three different tags to it saying it's too short and needs expansion. You editted and then reverted {{expand}}. You edited {{Lead article 6}}. You created {{Lead article 7}} and {{Lead article 8}}. These are not the acts of someone who is trying to abide by the spirit of imposed limits. So I'm giving you a time-out, in which to consider. After that you may attempt to demonstrate you are trying to be helpful. --Pi zero (talk) 19:54, 6 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

I know created lead article 7 and 8 they are for User:Bluesky/Main page because I dint change any off my current template to user:bluesky my userspace because I thought I dint need it to have that soi created that but next time if I want to Crete something I will ask you before submitting review and create stuff with my userspace Bluesky (talk) 20:38, 6 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

unblock

{{unblock|hi why did you block me globally when my only account is on here and meta I think I am not sure but it is noton any other project accept from wikinews please unblock me 109.144.209.161 (talk) 13:35, 14 April 2013 (UTC)}}Reply

Should this user be unblocked?

LauraHale has reviewed Bluesky's request to be unblocked, and the result was declined.
The reason given by LauraHale was: You were blocked for editing against consensus. You were given multiple opportunities to edit within consensus and were given multiple warnings that continuing to do so would lead to a block. There is no indication in the request that you understand the reason you were blocked and that you would not resume those activities..
Further debate can proceed here, however, the administrator's decision may be final, and the result of administrative consensus.

You were blocked here for one week, and that week expired yesterday. You are not locally blocked. If you're blocked globally, this isn't the place to inquire about it. --Pi zero (talk) 13:53, 14 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
