Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Article proposals for your class
editHi, I was hoping you could help me. Is there a forum in which I could submit an idea to your journalism class? There's an article I'd like to see written but I don't want to overwork our already shorthanded reviewer population. The simplest answer seems to be to ask one of you to do it as your assignment. To respond, write {{ping|Darkfrog24}} in your reply and Wikinews will tell me to come back. Darkfrog24 (talk) 11:41, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
Article Proposal
editHi Darkfrog24,
I've spoken with my tutor and we are interested in your idea if you still wanted to submit it. It's fine to just send it on here if you like.

- That was five days ago, so it's certainly past our freshness requirements, but I was hoping to get someone to write an article about the low box office of Ghost in the Shell. Because most of the writeups mentioned whitewashing having an effect on viewership, it would be a good way to practice neutrality. You might be able to find some new development--the movie opened in Japan on Friday--but you'd still be pushing the envelope. (NOTE: It's not that the sources have to be no more than two or three days old. It's that the event to which they refer must be no more than two or three days old, with an exception made for the publication of scientific findings.) Maybe if you got something out today it might pass review, but with the backlog you're better off picking something that happened no later than yesterday.
- On Wikipedia, you can take your time, even wait months when you know a good source book is scheduled to be published, but on Wikinews you have to jump. Darkfrog24 (talk) 11:54, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
- Though this may seem practically impossible, we can regularly update a page dedicated for UoW students to pick something current (if they don't know what to write) and write a synthesis. Alternatively, we can suggest them on their talk pages. For example (@AnUOW:), are you interested in the bombings in Cairo Church? Would you consider writing about it?
acagastya 12:07, 10 April 2017 (UTC)- A page like that would be a good idea, Acagastya. And if you like science, Eurekalert.org has the latest press releases before they hit mainstream news! Darkfrog24 (talk) 12:44, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
- Btw, I think the wikilink @Darkfrog24: was looking for is whitewashing. --Pi zero (talk) 12:50, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
- ...did I link to interior decorating by accident again? Darn it all. Darkfrog24 (talk) 12:05, 11 April 2017 (UTC)
