God article

Thanks for meeting me in the middle on this. I think that our strength is in being serious about news, and not succumbing to the tongue-in-cheek style that plagues the majority of the blogosphere. Despite the somewhat humorous nature of the lawsuit the senator is making a statement about frivolous lawsuits — this is a serious subject, and needs to be given proper respect, which is definitely hard to do when the action the senator took is so ridiculous. By planting our own humor into the story we make it completely about the humor of the suit, and do not respect the newsworthiness of the fact that a senator went to such an extreme to make a point.

I don't want to say that we have to be dry about our stories, or take humor out completely. But I think that we need to be careful to focus on the news aspect of our stories first. In either case, if you're ok with the compromise of the attribution to the external entity (Wired News) like you've done then I'll accept this compromise as well.  :-) -- IlyaHaykinson 10:01, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Hey it's me again. I downloaded Firefox. Love it. Installed Chatzilla but I can't seem to find out how to connect to the wikinews IRC channel. Public Domain articles

Just to test the theory, I'm going to some nice OR for a story tonight - I'll use {{PD-article}} and I will make it an excellent piece of OR...and there will most likely be the usual shitstorm of "zomg, we can't be famous if we're public domain". Truth be told, I've got a number of OR articles of extremely high quality (I don't waste time with false modesty, sorry) that I simply post elsewhere, or else just write up to keep in practise since graduating from University and College (English and Journalism) last year. I've actually been debating using my savings to go overseas and become WMF's first war correspondent...but I'm definitely insisting on PD-status of my works if I do so ;) Sherurcij ^{refusing to add Original Reporting until PD Articles are allowed} 02:25, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Here is what I would like done: Addition of Anthrocon 2007 draws thousands to Pittsburgh for furry weekend under a related news section. Might also be good to add Pittsburgh playwrights pen furry musical, invite Anthrocon attendees to observe reading, and to add the Anthrocon news article to that story's related news section, as all three relate to one another.

No, that was my meaning; if that's not what Wikinews does, then fair enough. I figured it made as much sense as having the old stories linked in the new ones, since people are just as likely to start reading the oldest as they are the newest - perhaps more so, as that one is featured. Hi DragonFire! Since you are like the wikinewsie here, I thought it better to ask you. :). My question is: Why is it that here, in English Wikinews, you are still publishing material in the public domain? For example, I recently came across this article. Does that actually respect WMF's policies? I mean, it's like "publishing" something in Wikipedia but with a - dunno - licence that's not GFDL. You do realise most people wouldn't consider a message saying "Don't leave, I don't hate you, I'm just challenging you so together we can make a better WN" to be "provocation", in fact it seems if anything to be an attempt to de-escalate things. My Talk page

Dragon, I'm tired of warring with this user on my Talk page. Instead of leaving it alone, they have constantly been reverting me in an attempt to goad me into engagement, which is fruitless since both on the Watercooler and at Sean Heron's page the engagement has already taken place, I have nothing new to say, and it did no good regardless (which is why I was so pissed off on Heron's page, because I had explained what happened at the Watercooler and this POV user didn't care). The issue over the Columbia article and Sherurcij

It's not the way Sherujic describes.

1. I went to Columbia to photograph the protest surrounding it. Reporters, except for four news agencies who supplied feeds, were not allowed in the auditorium. Reporters were put into two overflow rooms with big screens. During a paid working day I decided I could watch the video later on-line; it would be the same thing.
2. I spent about three hours from the time I left my office to the time I returned.
3. I went home and listened to the recordings I made of the protesters, download a gazillion photos, and try to write the article from scratch.
4. I never had a chance to watch the debate, so I relied on the New York Times coverage of it. Turns out some things were, apparently, inaccurate. I can't verify.
5. I mainly wrote about what I covered, for which there was little problem except that some people didn't want a communist represented, whereas anther person didn't want "he's a terrorist" represented. I think I provided a well-rounded, comprehensive selection of viewpoints.
6. Around 11:00 I was getting really tired and I was getting lost in the article. I also had to prepare to interview Tom Tancredo the next day. I posted a message on the Watercooler, without publishing, that the article could use other editors to look at it and gave the reason I just stated.
7. Sherurcij, who had earlier told me on the Trisha Posner interview that a common journalistic device (it's not mine) had legal problems (I went to law school), began trashing the article over a period of days. I was bothered by the tone of the edit summaries, but not that much.
8. Sherurcij questioned whether Ahmadinejad is anti-Semitic, and I responded that his Holocaust-denial qualified. I never called Sherurcij anti-Semitic, just Ahmadinejad.
9. Even if describing Iran's policy of killing gay people as "horrific" is POV, there were no attempts to engage me, but instead smack me in the face. That's not the way we should be helping each other write.
10. During the Watercooler discussion about Wikinewsie bullies, I took the opportunity to discuss my feelings that the project suffers from politeness issues, and I raised my accreditation requests and Sherurcij's edit summaries as evidence. I explained during that discussion everything I explained above. Sherurcij remained not only unapologetic, but defiantly defended everything she said and had done.
11. Sean Heron told Sherurcij that she could be nicer on her page. She responded on his page by attacking my character, as she had done at the Watercooler. This is when the situation devolved. Once again, over an article that I did not publish and had flagged as needing help. It was also only my second OR article, and I also based it off the New York Times.
12. I responded inappropriately to Sherurcij's attacks on Sean Heron's page.
13. But I also said I didn't want to engage Sherurcij anymore, and this was an issue that was much-talked about. But Sherurcij decided that she was going to push me by making comments that were rude and incivil on my talk page, and continually reverting my removal of them. This was not an attempt to de-escalate, but an attempt to provoke me. Which she also did by editing the Vivien Goldman interview, which I did nothing about.

Sherurcij does not seem to want to work together, collude, or attempt to better the project, but lord over editors with her own point of view as to what is right and what is not. There's no collaborative spirit that I can see. For a project as short-staffed as this, I find Sherurcij's behavior to engender more harm then her minor edits bring good, because she makes it an unpleasant atmosphere to work in. That's just my perspective. She spun wildly the way the situation went down on her own page. --David Shankbone 20:29, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

had it been PD, then no one on Wikinews would have gotten credit for this article - as it was, did any major news outlets credit Wikinews? Because the fact you're showing that no, they just stole it from you...kinda illustrates my point that no "reputable media outlet" is going to credit "Wikinews" anyways, and that it often in fact would prevent them from using a story. I'm just curious if anybody of the other "reputable media outlets" actually did say "And in surprising news from Wikinews today, it seems that..." - or published your article in their newspaper with a little "Courtesy of WIkinews" tag beneath it?

I saw the story in print, but I didn't see your story in print, because your story was CC-BY. If it had been PD, then newspapers would've told the story the same way you did, not changed details just to get around copyright. Sherurcij 00:41, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

...for the welcome. Listen, do you know if there is any way to transclude interwiki news feeds? I want to be able to monitor all Hawaii-related news articles on Wikinews from WikiProject Hawaii on Wikipedia, and allow our members to do the same. If this isn't possible, do you know if anyone is running Wikinews bots that could alert our members whenever a Hawaii-related news article is created, such as leaving a message on a Wikipedia user talk page or updating a subpage?
