Policies

Reviewing articles is listed as a core policy. It isn't (yet). --InfantGorilla (talk) 01:56, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Having a span with the id HowdyWelcomeTemplatePolicy or HowdyWelcomeTemplateDiscussion inside a tab box with an id of HowdyWelcomeTemplate (aka this template) causes magical intertab linkage. atm these links are hard coded special cases in the javascript (doing it for generic intertab link is somewhat more complicated). If you need other intertab links, talk to user:Bawolff. Bawolff 08:30, 21 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

font size

edit

Based on user feedback I have increased the font size from x-small to small. Bawolff 23:21, 22 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

That was a good idea, it was previously difficult to read on small/medium-sized monitors. Now it looks much better. tempodivalse 23:22, 22 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

New image

edit

Anybody think that commons:File:Cup-o-cofee-simple.svg would look better? Calebrw (talk) 22:28, 8 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Having tried this new image in the template, I like the effect. It feels more integrated into the presentation, giving an impression of immediate presence of a cup of coffee. --Pi zero (talk) 01:22, 9 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
I like it as well, I'd support implementing this in the template. Tempodivalse [talk] 02:47, 9 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
agreed. Bawolff 04:35, 9 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
That looks nice, but as a high-visibility template I'd sandbox a copy with that so that there's only one edit to update it and tweaks are on the copy until it is just right. --Brian McNeil / talk 07:28, 9 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

I tried it out with Preview, and I agree that it looks far better. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 13:53, 9 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

I went ahead and changed the image, as everyone seems to agree it is better. I also made it a bit bigger to lessen the amount of whitespace underneath. Have a look. Tempodivalse [talk] 17:47, 9 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Text

edit

Right now the "hover" text reads: "A nice cup of coffee for while you get started." That makes sense, but I had to think about for a second. I was thinking that it would better as: :A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started." Could be just me though. Calebrw (talk) 21:59, 9 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hm, that was probably a typo. I've fixed it now. Tempodivalse [talk] 02:29, 12 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Calebrw (talk) 05:41, 12 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Looking at Special:AllMessages for a completely separate reason and ran across MediaWiki:Welcomecreation. It displays what amounts to a a copy of the old welcome template. Does anyone think that {{howdy}} should be added instead? Calebrw (talk) 05:41, 12 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Someone else want to trial the change I've just made as well? Seems OK to me. --Brian McNeil / talk 10:36, 12 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Looks good in both FF 3, IE 8 and Sarari 4 (on Windows XP). The only think I can think of is to added the -webkit CSS to the "tabbertab" class. I'll see if I can track "tabbertab" down. Calebrw (talk) 19:20, 12 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Tried it but it didn't seem to work. See MediaWiki:Common.css's history. Cleared cache and everything. I'll take a look at the code on {{social bookmarks}} and see what's there. Calebrw (talk) 19:33, 12 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Code should be:
-webkit-border-top-right-radius: 2em;
-webkit-border-top-left-radius: 2em;
Anybody have ideas? Calebrw (talk) 19:37, 12 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Looks good in FF 3, IE 8 and Safari 4 (minus tabs) on Windows Vista. Calebrw (talk) 20:13, 12 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
I did a google search, according to [1] Calebrw's edit should of fixed it. I'm currently trying to download a webkit browser to see for myself. Bawolff 01:42, 13 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
What exactly does this do? Does it place the welcome template on every new account that is created? Because I like that idea, if that's what it is suppose to do. Gopher65talk 20:56, 19 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

I managed to download midori (which is webkit based. quite speedy too. I might consider switching from my beloved firefox) Apparently in addition to webkit not liking shorthand border radius deceleration, it also doesn't like big radii [2] (from my understanding the css3 spec says if the radii given is too big, the browser should default to the biggest legal radii. webkit seems to default to having no border radius instead. Anyways to make a long story short, it should work now. Bawolff 22:36, 13 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

It does work now, but the rounded bits are too round and they don't work with the exsisting text size. Calebrw (talk) 23:20, 14 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
How about know (do a hard refresh. note i also made some changes for moz too, but to me it looks almost identical on moz). Bawolff 00:44, 15 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
I concur, without taking a screenshot and doing a pixel-by-pixel comparison, they look dead on to me. Size much improved on -webkit. Calebrw (talk) 01:30, 15 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Article creation tab

edit

What are thoughts on having a "Write" tab on this template so every user has a dialogue box on their talk page they can start an article from?

If so, how should the template used for article creation perhaps be tweaked? --Brian McNeil / talk 11:25, 18 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'd imagine we'd want it to be pretty similiar to the new article box on the main page. Bawolff 19:59, 18 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
I went ahead and created a new tab for the new article box. It's sort of similar to what we have on the main page right now. Feel free to change it or make improvements. Tempodivalse [talk] 20:25, 18 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
That looks good. I suggested it after seeing a newbie set up their own subpage for article creation. --Brian McNeil / talk 09:15, 19 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

misalign

edit

This is a really great template, but I notice that on my snow leopard macbook, FF 3.5.3 the tabs are ever-so-slightly overhanging the right border. - Amgine | t 14:10, 30 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Add optional parameter

edit

Perhaps we could add {{{1|}}} after the end of the first page, so that users that are welcoming manually can use {{howdy|~~~~}} to add their signature to the end of the template and not outside it? — μ 15:41, June 10 2010 (UTC)

The Wikipedia logo used in this template is fugly. It should be changed to the official one, File:Wikipedia-logo.svg. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 20:05, 11 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
