Welcome

edit

Jon Harald Søby, welcome to Wikinews! Thank you for your contributions; I hope you like the place and decide to stay! If you haven't done so already, you may want to create an account.

Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!

Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:

There are always things to do on Wikinews:

By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! --Deprifry|+T+ 18:14, 6 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much, Deprify! ;-) (BTW, when welcoming people with template messages, you should use {{subst:hello}}. That way total noobs won't be confused when they edit the page.) Jon Harald Søby 18:57, 6 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Well, yeah. But we aren't really using subst around here, although you're right it would probably be better. I guess we are just lazy ;). --Deprifry|+T+ 19:01, 6 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Hehe. But another thing, it screws up section editing… Oh well. Jon Harald Søby 19:03, 6 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Alright, you've conviced me. Had some problems with an anon who couldn't figure out how to edit his talk page because of it and I guess doing it the WP-way would avoid that. From now on, I shall use subst (All under the condition that I don't forget this by tommorow). --Deprifry|+T+ 19:08, 6 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Checkuser premature?

edit

Please note ongoing discussion and rescind your premature checkuser designation. Redman 22:48, 9 June 2006 (UTC) Also Wikinews:Water_cooler#Is_ArbCom_growing_in_responsibilities_without_any_discussion_or_voting_from_community.3F --Cspurrier 22:51, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Seems "wikistalking" is a reality. Redman 23:11, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Bit paranoid there aren't we :) I along with several other users watch the Wikinews RC IRC (#en.wikinews on irc.wikimedia.org) channel, using it you can see edits in almost real time. I read or at least glance, at almost all edits on Wikinews, as do many other users, especially when the subject line is as interesting as “Checkuser premature?”.--Cspurrier 23:32, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

{{delete}}

edit

This template requires a parameter giving a reason, you should also leave the text unless it is libellous so the admin deleting it can check. Most admins probably ignore the template's extra parameter, but if it is not present the instructions say you should remove the tag. --Brian McNeil / talk 21:31, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Okay. My main priority was removing it from the main page, which I achieved by deleting all the other text, but deleting the {{publish}} template would probably suffice, I guess. Jon Harald Søby 13:01, 20 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Rollback?

edit

I am curious, how did you do this if you are not an admin? I don't particularly mind, but am just curious. Cirt (talk) 23:44, 30 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

It must have been global rollback, nevermind. Cheers, Cirt (talk) 00:03, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oui, you are correct. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 16:56, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ah okay thanks, and thank you for your help on the project. Cirt (talk) 19:26, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

wtf

edit

While I'm sure your cry of "what the fuck?" was rhetorical, I'm going to answer it anyways :p. From the article: " "I knew it was wrong, I knew it was unlawful," said Nelson." should reveal all. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 22:22, 30 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yup, I understood that there was something like that involved – however, without that context, the title suggested that the detainee was killed illegally, as opposed to doing it the legal way, you know. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 16:42, 4 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re: Berlusconi follow up story

edit

Hi. I'm gonna add to the "wtf" above, with one of my own, wtf :)? Could I please ask for your reasoning (having seen the edit summary you left) for your moving the follow up story on Silvio Berlusconi's assault, and the fact that he now remains in hospital? The original article yesterday already quoted his name along with his position in the title, so anyone seeing the followup would most likely have known who I was on about anyhow. "Prime Minister of Italy to remain in hospital" had nothing wrong with it :) Iceflow (talk) 00:58, 15 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I agree there was nothing wrong with it, it's simply that I believe more people know him as Berlusconi than as "the Prime Minister of Italy" (I, for one, for years thought he was the President of Italy and not the Prime Minister), and virtually all other stories I've seen on the matter elsewhere refer to Berlusconi in the title and not to his position. Therefore the original title struck me as somewhat off, if you know what I mean. As for the relation to yesterday's article, I didn't remember it upon reading this one (but I probably did see it in the RSS feed), and think it would be wrong to expect all readers to have read it and/or remember it. At least 85 dead in shooting at Norwegian youth camp

edit

Hi. Site policy requires that if you make a substantive edit to a published article, you don't site it yourself. So you should have left this edit for someone else to sight.

The policy was put in place in early 2010, and Blood Red Sandman wanted to put notices on everybody's talk pages letting them know, but there were objections that that would have been sort of spam-like. So we're stuck letting people know one at a time as the issue comes up. (Clearly we should have done as Blood Red Sandman suggested, but, well, we didn't.) --Pi zero (talk) 13:20, 24 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

I don't see removing misinformation as "substantive", but I understand the principle, and will follow it from now on. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 16:14, 30 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Busy elsewhere? We understand, but this is a notice of privilege expiry!

Note! Your privileges on English Wikinews have been reduced.

Under the Privilege expiry policy (enacted October 13, 2012) the rights held by your user account have been reduced due to inactivity, or lack of privilege use. You can view your user rights log here.
Point 4 of the Privilege expiry policy provides for fast-tracking reacquisition of privileges. We all understand that real-life commitments can severely curtail the level of commitment you can give to Wikinews; the privilege reduction is in no way intended as a reflection on your past work, or to imply you are unwelcome. The aim in curtailing privileges is to address security risks, and concern that a long period of inactivity means you may not be up-to-date with current policy and practices.

Hello. I realise you’ve not edited here for a while but I came across the above page. Do you still need it or should we delete it? Cheers for your time. --Green Giant (talk) 00:42, 28 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Since there has been no response for almost six months, the page has been deleted. Let me know if you need a copy of it. [24Cr][talk] 20:54, 15 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
