Talk:'Davos man' versus 'Camp Igloo'; 42nd World Economic Forum convenes in Swiss alps
Original reporting
edit- The 2011 and 2012 reports are somewhat problematic to compare; several risks have been renamed, and the very easy to work with chart this year contrasts with a more interactive 'scatter plot' in 2011.
Below are links into the two reports, with highlighting of which plots/graphs are being compared. --Brian McNeil / talk 13:25, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
WEF 2012 report
editThe report (http://www.weforum.org/reports/global-risks-2012-seventh-edition) is a bit on the "interactive" side.
This makes drawing data out of the report easy, but also tricky to verify unless how facts are arrived at is explained. So, for reference:
- The Risk List, use the impact and likelihood columns sort options to verify assertions on economic risks Davos will discuss.
WEF 2011 report
editThe 2011 report: http://riskreport.weforum.org/
This lacks a "risks list", instead substituting barometers (http://riskreport.weforum.org/#/0/1) and landscape (http://riskreport.weforum.org/#/?re_layout=1&re_IDs=).
Method of comparison
editAs the most-simple report to review, I've worked from th sortable 2012 report, then compared equivalent items with where they plot in the 2011 landscapes. --Brian McNeil / talk 13:25, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Interview segment
editJust contacted @Occupy_WEF via twitter; am asking for an email contact address to sub a few questions (hardly a twitter-suitable discussion). Please chuck any questions in here ASAP! --Brian McNeil / talk 00:28, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
So-far, having not received an email to send more in-depth questions to, have messaged the following via twitter:
- Have you reached a decision yet on the invite from WEF founder Klaus Schwab, as-reported by the Associated Press?
- Do you consider Schwab's invite a last-minute PR exercise, or a more genuine concern over economic inequality?
- If there had been no "Occupy Wall Street" do you believe the failings of capitalism would top the WEF agenda?
- Did anyone get the train from Berne to Davos? How did the price compare to a 5,100 CHF private jet or helicopter flight?
"Conduct an interview with Q&A of 140 characters or less". The 'Occupy' movement do themselves a great disservice if they see that as "credible". --Brian McNeil / talk 01:32, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
With @Occupy_WEF obviously sleeping, I've sent out a handful of questions via email.
- One set to the UK's Trades Union Congress
- One set to the London office of Human Rights Watch.
Been working on this for much of the last 12 hours, and dont - yet - feel sleepy (sorry Pizero, that may mean more content). --Brian McNeil / talk 02:37, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
- Still zero response from Occupy_WEF.
For rail price comparison, used www.sbb.ch, looked up the next train Berne->Davos. First class ticket (no railcard) is 145CHF. Adding this in as a comparison. --Brian McNeil / talk 12:58, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
Headline
editPrefer single quotes in headlines. :-) --Pi zero (talk) 12:37, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- Okay, but any other headline remarks before multiple renames ensue? --Brian McNeil / talk 13:06, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- "Davos man" should be in single quotes just as "Camp Igloo", but this raises another point. Ultimately, the term "Davos man" should have some explanation in the article. Coming to this cold (sorry), the term "Davos man" confused me. The first source capitalized Man, making it look bizarrely like a personal name till I ferreted out the explanation of meaning and origin substantially further down in that source. --Pi zero (talk) 16:08, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Incremental review
edit...would come in handy. Case in point. I've source-checked (copy/ver) the last paragraph of the intro, to do with Murdoch etc. And that's all I've source-checked. And I'm now off to get my hair cut. --Pi zero (talk) 18:22, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- If you want to put <--PiZ Review:OK, time--> start/end marks around any reviewed sections,... great! I've decided, with video taking an age (broke commons upload helper) that I'll defer 'til tommorow on pushing for publish. Hopefully a big chunk can then be cleared prior to 'formally subbing'. --Brian McNeil / talk 19:32, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Opening video
editSeems (now I finally find a timetable) Merkel's opening address isn't until 17:00 UTC.
There's an opening press conference this AM, will try to capture and edit that as an alternative. --Brian McNeil / talk 09:53, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
On a lead
editSeeking yet-another-Wikinews-first, I've done a cropped video for use on a front-page lead position.
That ought to have a few people's eyes on stalks. --Brian McNeil / talk 23:24, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
