I'm tempted to move this, since titles beginning with "WN:" usually are redirects to a longer title. How does Wikinews:Internet Relay Chat sound? —Zachary talk 00:03, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
- That sounds like it would be better. Funpika 01:28, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
Web interface
editThe web interface has been down for quite some time now. Who can we contact to get this up and running again? —Zachary talk 10:16, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
- It has been like that on and off for quite a while. DragonFire1024 10:17, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
- If I get some time this week I will get CGI:IRC setup on my server. --Cspurrier 22:17, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
freenode webchat is working and can be hotlinked to load channels: http://webchat.freenode.net/?randomnick=1&channels=wikinews%2Cwikinews-en Mike Chelen (talk) 20:52, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
- The link on the page already does the channel spec, but I added the random nick. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 23:26, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
login on this page
editHow about putting the login box on this actual page. It can be done with javascript (See User:Bawolff/sandbox/irc.js after putting:
var url = "http://en.wikinews.org/w/index.php?title=user:Bawolff/sandbox/irc.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s";
var scriptElem = document.createElement( 'script' );
scriptElem.setAttribute( 'src' , url );
scriptElem.setAttribute( 'type' , 'text/javascript' );
document.getElementsByTagName( 'head' )[0].appendChild( scriptElem );
on special:mypage/monobook.js). This more or less works right now, theres just a couple lose ends on it to tie up (like making channel a dropdown, and some other js stuff, shouldn't take that long). What do you think? Bawolff ☺☻ 21:07, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, why not. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 11:07, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
- ok, do a hard refresh of the page + http://en.wikinews.org/w/index.php?title=mediawiki:common.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s Bawolff ☺☻ 03:51, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

What about live chat on non-IRC platforms?
editthere is wikinews.slack.com slack channel, and a t://t.me/wikinewsie telegram group. Shouldn't we list it?

- Eh, Internet Relay Chat is a protocol with various free client software. The others are commercial platforms, as far as I know. If we go that far, why not Google Hangouts? --SVTCobra 03:15, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
- Telegram is not commercial, it is FOSS, and a lot of discussions of Wikimedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia LGBT+, Wiki Loves Love take place on Telegram. As for Google Hangouts, which I don't use, I don't know -- but I have noticed many FOSS groups have multiple platforms for communication.
•–• 03:46, 4 May 2018 (UTC)- How are they raising funds if they don't have a business plan? "The corporation has raised $850M in the first round, 81 investors participated in this issuance. As of April 2018, the firm has reported raising $1.7 billion through the ongoing ICO. Company officials have not made any public statements regarding the ICO." ... hmmm .... --SVTCobra 03:54, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
- Feel free to tweet that to Durov. He generally answers all the queries. Also, in an interview (with CNN?) he answered those questions.
103.254.128.130 (talk) 04:17, 4 May 2018 (UTC)- I do not participate in the cesspool that is Twitter. However, "Telegram Messenger states that its end-goal is not to bring profit, but it is not currently structured as a non-profit organization." Either way, it is a privately held corporation and not merely an internet protocol. --SVTCobra 16:31, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- You don't seem to participate in the "internet protocol" services, to begin with; so what is the point in bringing this up? And there is MTProto. Afa "cesspool that XYZ is" is concerned -- you could extend that to any and every service -- and that does not help. That said, none of the active editors have access to, or knows who runs Wikinews' Twitter, or Facebook handle. The subreddit wikinews has nobody who is a wikinewsie. That said, what is the point in having accounts on any such platform, when I have to spend weeks or even months just knowing who has the login credentials. We suck in all those things.
103.254.128.130 (talk) 18:34, 5 May 2018 (UTC)- Well, what's the point in bringing up non-IRC platforms? Won't that just split the live-chat people into smaller groups i different places? --SVTCobra 18:40, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- What is the point of having IRC channel at the first place -- the number of people who are on the channel -- most of them do not edit enwn -- not all those who speak have edited on the project in this year. The "active" editors who occasionally speak in the channel is three. If "splitting" was the problem, one would hav followed nlwn's approach of having everything on-wiki, and therefore eliminating the chance of quick response. The point is not about dividing the community, it is, how many people can we reach out to, vice versa.
103.254.128.130 (talk) 18:55, 5 May 2018 (UTC)- The IRC channels are a standard to place to look for more-interactive communication with Wikinewsies. And they work, somewhat, for that purpose. --Pi zero (talk) 21:57, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
