Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Accreditation Expiration
editGreetings, I wanted to let you know that our policy regarding accreditation has recently changed slightly. Specifically we've enacted an automatic expiration of accreditation after 2 years. You can very easily "re-up" your accreditation should you choose to, but at this point in time you're on the Inactive list. As such your accreditation will automatically be revoked on March 15th unless you request otherwise. Currently, posting to the following thread will keep your accreditation. At a later date, all Accredited reporters will be put in for that "re-up", at which time you'll be notified. Thank you, and should you have any questions, feel free to contact me on my talk page. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 20:47, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- If it is indeed two years, then mine would expire next year - in 2011. Rklawton (talk) 20:56, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
Accredited Reporter ID
editJust to give you a little more info on ID:
- MessedRocker used to do laminated ID for people, I got one of those - and it didn't look too great.
- For myself, I created a business card design, and got a couple hundred printed off. I don't have access to that design at the moment, but could relatively easily reproduce it.
- If you can find a local printer, and get the size specs, I'll create a template and fill in details for you. I used VistaPrint - but don't know if they're available in the US.
- Email me for more information on that. --Brian McNeil / talk 11:28, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure I can make some up on my own - but it's better to have something professional. Rklawton (talk) 13:02, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
- IIRC, my card design is up on Wikinewsie in some obscure location - I'll take a look and email you a link. It was a little off on the bleed for printing, but people assume these are cards from a pro organisation. --Brian McNeil / talk 18:53, 24 April 2011 (UTC)
- Cool, thanks. Rklawton (talk) 18:58, 24 April 2011 (UTC)
Wikinews Writing contest 2013 is here. :) Please sign up to participate?
editWe've created the Wikinews:Writing contest 2013, which will start on April 1 and end on June 1. It is modeled on the successful 2010 contest. It would be a really great time for you, as a Wikinews accredited reporter, to do some original reporting and conduct interviews. People should be around to interview to prevent a backlog, and several reviewers have access to scoop to make it easier to review any original reporting you do. If you are interested in signing up, please do so on Wikinews:Writing contest 2013/entrants. There is at least one prize on offer for the winner along with the opportunity to earn some barn stars as a way of thanking you for your participation. :D --LauraHale (talk) 10:19, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
