Getting started as a contributor How to write an article Pick something current? Use two independent sources? Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems. All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours. Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

Places to go, people to meet Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Write your first article for Wikinews! Use the following box to help you create your first article. Simply type in a title to your story and press "Create page". Then start typing text to your story into the new box that will come up. When you're done, press "save page". That's all there is to it! It is recommended you read the article guide before starting. Also make sure to check the list of recently created articles to see if your story hasn't already been reported upon.

Re:Import

Wikinews has disabled transwiki importing, so I couldn't import the template over here. So, I tried to copy the template text from Commons, but it didn't look too good, so I ended up having to tinker around a bit. I came up with {{User SUL}}, is this okay? fr.wikinews and Google News

Hi!

I think you're involved in this. Are all the checkboxes ticked for editorial control? If I can map fr.wn policies and guidelines to en.wn ones I can do the submission to Google (although Josh Cohen seems to have been promoted since I last spoke to him).

I'd really like to see this done on several Wikinews language editions and then Google made aware of interlanguage links. From their point of view it would have to be great to put up "English Headline (French) (German) ..." Then we might be able to move on to getting a gadget to translate accross. So, say, take EN article, click button, start developing translation on FR, hope that gets tidied and reviewed. If we're also feeding back quality information/better translations to Google they will love us even more ;-) --Brian McNeil / ^talk 14:05, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

• "English Headline" might be more clear to you if I write "Article title in English (French) (German)". What I mean is that if you are looking at Google News and an article has gone through peer_review and publish in multiple languages that the headline can be shown in your interface language, plus alternatives in other languages.

The reason I'm interested is that we're trying to set up a writing competition. I would like to see it active beyond just English. So, any language that's getting listed in Google News can have entrants.

For Google News, my part-working memory say you need the following:-

1. A group of people carying out Editorial review and publication functions
2. Criteria for how people get the Editor rights
3. A template or other mechanism to show that an article has been reviewed (parallel to {{peer review}})

There are technical requirements (need numbers in links given to Google) Bawolff (talk · contribs) can explain that and probably sort out the gadget we use for your needs. Then I can make the submission to Google News and send a courtesy copy to Josh Cohen the business manager for GNews. This makes sure that frWN will be listed as an International news source, and linked to enWN. When we were first listed they put us in the index as based in Florida!
