Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Hi there! Thanks for your article, The plight continues. Unfortunately, the article isn't ready to be published. I've left some notes on the talk page.
- The article headline is too vague. You can read more about how we write headlines at Wikinews:Naming conventions. At the moment, I don't know what the article is about without reading the article itself.
- We need Special:Categories on each article; ideally this would be things like Syria, Category:Politics and conflicts, et cetera. To add categories to a page, you add [[Category:Syria]] to the bottom of the article. You can also use "HotCat", which adds a easy interface for adding categories. You can enable it in your preferences. Generally, we try to add, at a minimum, a category for "where" (e.g. Syria), and "who" (maybe Category:World Health Organization?). We also add at least one top-level category from the list at Category:News_articles_by_section.
- You should use the {{w}} template. Doing so allows us to link to Wikipedia if a Wikinews page doesn't exist, and helps us to categorise pages at a later date. You should also be linking key words that have Wikipedia articles, such as Maaret al-Artiq.
- You can add topic templates by adding things like {{Syria}} to the top of an article.
- Don't forget to watch your casing; names should be proper case, for example.

- Commonwealth Bank introduces card-less ATMs has also not been edited for a while; please take a look at it. Thanks, Microchip08 (talk) 09:43, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
An article you contributed to, Car stackers could solve Sydney's parking problem, has not yet been published, but has not been edited for a significant period of time. Please consider taking another look at it, and trying to fix the problems the reviewer raised. You can then submit it for re-review, and hopefully it will be published. If the article is not edited after two days, it will be deleted (or moved out of the main article space, as appropriate). Thanks, Microchip08 (talk) 08:25, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
