Bidgee, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!

Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:

There are always things to do on Wikinews:

By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! Here you add one new detail (wikilinks and corrections to formal names don't count), That detail is the hailstorm. You've added four new sources. I can't believe you need all of them just for that one detail. --Brian McNeil / talk 22:02, 23 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Australian Paralympic runners talk about sponsorship

edit

Hi. There's some clarification needed; reviewed as not ready with these review comments. --Pi zero (talk) 09:59, 18 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi. There's a complication with this one. The other two interviews, written up by Laura, were reviewed by me, and I wrote various comments/criticisms of the article strategy. But this one, which (I see) you largely wrote up, was reviewed by someone else, who not-ready'd it and left a note on Laura's user talk about it; it looks as if the reviewer missed who had written the text. Quite a complicated tangle. At any rate, leaving this note to let you know there's been a snag with it. --Pi zero (talk) 22:45, 24 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

However

edit

.....and not to remotely back-pedal on my apology, I would like to say something amidst your lamentation about being tired. By your own admission, you've made tens upon tens upon tens of thousands of submissions to various things wiki-related. That's great, and I mean that. To generalize, this isn't your first rodeo (as we like to say in Texas).....and you're well imbedded here at Wikinews. It's important to point out that, late, tired, spent, hungover, or whatever.....YOU ready'd the article. You said, "It's in good shape.", when you changed it to review. After you've taken a few deep breaths, go back and look at paragraphs 3 and 4 when you ready'd that article.....they're a trainwreck and you know it......confusing, winding, meandering......nowhere close to ready and you know it. Less than 48 hours ago, I ready'd one of my own articles (amidst yelping kids) and later believed it looked like it was written by a drunk monkey.....and I HURRIEDLY OWNED UP TO IT........because, that's journalism. While my comments could've used a bit of tweaking, admittedly, please share with Laura that there is NEVER a time that I want an article to fail.....NEVER. What you guys are doing (one heck of a burden for a couple of regular-type civic journalists) is important....it is; but the demand for quality news reporting will not be tucked under a rock because you've a blister on your toe. --Bddpaux (talk) 02:07, 25 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Some good faith would be good! When I tagged it is ready, I thought that it was. Your comments keep attacking me as an editor (e.g. they're a trainwreck and you know it) and not advice on the content and you have me questioning whether I should contribute to the project. I went out of my way to make it to the event. 153.107.33.156 (talk) 04:48, 25 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Admittedly, my crime might be leaning too far toward this.....let's call it my Achilles Heel. Most importantly, though.....it's a shame we don't know each other socially. You'd know what a nice guy I really am. My love for good journalism borders on a religious-type zeal.....and I'm quite certain it comes across (at times) with a certain jaggedness that's unwarranted. I value your contributions. Within a wiki (as you're fully aware), in a sense, there is no "them". There is only "us". You are a part of this. I see you as a part of this project. Keep working. Keep contributing. Keep at it. Here's to good things down the road. --Bddpaux (talk) 17:32, 25 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Bddpaux, the following passages are both from WN:Never assume: "Treat people as well as circumstances allow... You don't have to naively trust people in order to treat them with respect, or in order to help them learn what they should be doing." "When criticizing submitted work, if there's no reason to also criticize the author, don't." --Pi zero (talk) 21:51, 25 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
<sigh> Not every tense moment is a good time to try to give general advice. I recommend less generality for a while, and more constructively coping with the particular article currently on the table. That's what I mean to do. (And no, it has not escaped my attention that my first sentence, there, is itself trying to give general advice. :-) --Pi zero (talk) 04:04, 25 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Audio reports

edit

I'm sorry the reception on the audio report/interview was "sub-optimal". I caught Laura in IRC to have a quick chat on this; it's a form we've not really done before. So, I took an interview I recorded back in 2007 (and similarly suffered on transcription) and pared it back to this example.

I'm trying to take the load off anyone in the same situation as you, push it to the reviewers and, by doing this now, have something close to this agreed as a perfectly acceptable format for a report. --Brian McNeil / talk 11:53, 25 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Tony Abbott competes in 2012 Wagga Wagga fun run

Published, with a couple of details pulled for lack of support; see review comments and, of course, detailed history of edits during review.

Wish we'd been able to review this one sooner; sounds like a fun event. --Pi zero (talk) 19:53, 11 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Japanese skiers compete at IPC Nor-Am Cup Super G

edit

There's a Japanese skier on the score board who isn't mentioned in the article. Fumihiko Ito with time 1:22.09. We had one like this on the Australian article, which I negotiated with Laura; in that case, I got a sanity check about the appopriateness of adding mention, and also I hadn't known what kind of skier the person was (sit skier, iirc). In this case, I'm afraid I also don't know the gender of the athlete (presumably I could tell if I new Japanese names better).

I expect to go ahead and publish without, but even after publication it would be good to clear this up. --Pi zero (talk) 18:03, 12 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

The red writing (countries) is female and blue is male. Bidgee (talk) 19:47, 12 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Could you add the second-run times for those athletes (all are listed on the score-board picture, I believe)? Or replace the first-run times with the totals, or something? The lede also needs to explain what they won for (that day's combined two-run time, I gather), though I could probably fix that if you don't have time. --Pi zero (talk) 13:50, 13 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Now I've read your note on the article talk, and honestly I'm even more confused. :-(  --Pi zero (talk) 13:53, 13 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
I've taken your suggestion on-board and added the total times, I had the first run times as that is what Laura used for past articles but she told me that she didn't have the second or total times. I'll try and fix the lede. Bidgee (talk) 13:59, 13 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews Writing contest 2013 is here. :) Please sign up to participate?

edit

We've created the Wikinews:Writing contest 2013, which will start on April 1 and end on June 1. It is modeled on the successful 2010 contest. It would be a really great time for you, as a Wikinews accredited reporter, to do some original reporting and conduct interviews. People should be around to interview to prevent a backlog, and several reviewers have access to scoop to make it easier to review any original reporting you do. If you are interested in signing up, please do so on Wikinews:Writing contest 2013/entrants. There is at least one prize on offer for the winner along with the opportunity to earn some barn stars as a way of thanking you for your participation. :D --LauraHale (talk) 10:19, 25 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Election committee?

edit

Would you be interested in serving on the en.wn ArbCom election committee? About the only really necessary thing involved is certifying the election results at the end (around August 1), which is generally straightforward. --Pi zero (talk) 12:13, 29 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Indian archer Pooja shoots for and misses round of 8 at Rio Paralympics

edit

I've marked this abandoned. If you'd like it moved to your userspace rather than deleted (or if you'd like it retrieved after deletion and moved to your userspace), just ask. --Pi zero (talk) 17:56, 25 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

That would be great, thanks. Bidgee (talk) 07:55, 27 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Well, I retrieved and moved the article itself, but meanwhile the images had been deleted as unused fair-use images. It may be fair game to restore those images; it's a point I'm not entirely familiar with, and I feel I should check first with the deleting admin (who, fortunately, I expect will be around again in the reasonably near future). --Pi zero (talk) 11:06, 27 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Images retrieved, after this reply from the deleting admin. --Pi zero (talk) 15:34, 28 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
