Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Dispute resolution with Mrmiscellanious

edit

Hi Jason.... informal dispute resolution was attempted with MrM four weeks ago. This is basically where all parties of a dispute make a statement, then respond to other statements, the community provides input, and everybody works together to try and achieve consensus on a resolution. Dispute resolution is not a formal process, and there are no sanctions, it is just where the community comes together to discuss something that has become a problem. Mrmiscellanious refused to participate. Prior to that the dispute simmered for months, with numerous attempts to find a solution on talk pages, water cooler, WN:ALERT, etc. Cartman only resorted to the Arbcon when Mrmiscellanious erected a brick-wall between himself and the community, refusing to speak to anyone about problems that were obvious to all. I agree that Arbcon is less than ideal, but I see no other options. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions or comments about this. - Borofkin 01:00, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi Jason... so do you acknowledge that significant attempts at community-based dispute resolution were made prior to the problem being brought to the Arbcon? People keep repeating this, but you don't seem to have addressed it. - Borofkin 01:56, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply Jason. I didn't ask if you were aware of the issue, or if arbcon should be allowed to de-admin, or any of the other things you have said on my talk page. I realise that the first you heard of this dispute was when it appeared on Arbcon. I realise that you don't support Arbcon, and I realise that you think that Arbcon should not be permitted to de-admin a user. My question was very specific: do you acknowledge that significant attempts at community-based dispute resolution were made prior to the problem being brought to the Arbcon? - Borofkin 02:08, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Fair enough. So my question now is: what else should have been done, besides Wikinews:Dispute resolution/Users Borofkin, Mrmiscellanious, and others, to involve the community? The purpose of Wikinews:Dispute resolution is to "expose the issue to a larger audience". Wikinews:Dispute resolution is the standard way to seek the help of the wider community to resolve a dispute, and has been for a long time. It was publicised on the water cooler, and on the talk page of all involved parties. What else could we have done? - Borofkin 02:18, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

It's possible that we could make an effort to publicise disputes more widely, however it could get cumbersome. Consider Wikipedia:Requests for mediation and Wikipedia:Requests for comment. As Wikinews grows, there will be more disputes, and we can't put links to them all on the nav bar or on the Workspace. However, if you think it is a worthwhile idea, you should propose it on the water-cooler. Anything that helps resolve disputes before they reach the Arbcom is a good thing. - Borofkin 02:38, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Regarding my RfA

edit

Jason, thanks again for all your hard work on the hotel articles. I think you've been really under-appreciated for that. Also, thanks for your support on my RfA. I know the community will support an adminship on your behalf once the political stuff blows over here. Thanks again. :) irid:t 22:35, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Bad.

edit

I find this and some more quite offensive:

"On the "baby" part: Internation was being a baby and was attempting to force his POV and opinions on not just MrM but everyone invloved in that article. It was not a personal attack, but a statement of truth.

On the "not fit for Wikinews" part: International was attempting to incite violence, and or edit warring. His actions on the talk page and article in question are not fit for Wikinews, especially if one cannot follow WN:NPOV. International seems to hae an issue with that, even when voting for administrators on WN:A. "

I advise you to be less confrontativ and agressive in the future and to try to understand the policys you constantly refering to. Looking forward to enjoy the editing of a kinder Dragonfire international 19:56, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

What a nice link I came across. http://www.needlenose.com/node/view/2161/30747

Notice the "IMPORTANT RECRUITMENT DRIVE" under the article...This is my favorite quote:

Eventually, with enough of us in there we can become the admins there and change the balance of power!!! TIP: Some of us should act like we are conservatives so they will let their guard down and allow us to become admins. Then our proxy admins can vote in other admins, get it? Getting FACTS out about our govt. is something YOU can do to TRULY help America right now. Been frustrated? This can be your outlet: Take over wikinews from the conservatives! http://en.wikinews.org/

Hmmm...and personal attacks have moved off Wikinews now...not that we can do anything about it here: (also from http://www.needlenose.com/node/view/2161/30747 )

Neutralizer really needs our help. Keep in mind, be civil... and when conservatives like Mrmiscellanious attack you with insults.. be polite and try to get around his agendas slowly or he and others will ban you.

Wikinews has been inflitrated by a crazed little clique of militaristic neo-con Bush nuts. Please help us take it back! There's a struggle going on to preserve the independence of Wikinews, the collaborative current affairs version of Wikipedia. Stories that make America look bad either get watered down or completely stopped. Please help us reclaim Wikinews! Cowicide, 25.10.2005 00:51

Even has a link directly to the water cooler.

Standoff article

Thanks for your help with the sources. I've edited Wikipedia plenty, but I'm new over here. Osgoodelawyer 22:23, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure that's POV. It hasn't gotten much attention outside of Hamilton, despite the situation having gone on for seven weeks. It is a relevant fact. Also, how would one remove the link to a source listed in the template? The Dominion link does not go to the right place. Osgoodelawyer 22:32, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
You are correct, but the way it was worded it was a little POV...I did however; add that back in there with the factual note of the injunction, which enforces the fact :) Jason Safoutin 22:37, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
