English version

Papua New Guinea phone company, B-Mobile, has received a huge monetary fine for failing to provide service to the Solomon Islands.

Jemima Garrett reports, that the Solomon Islands Telecommunication Commission has put a One Million US Dollar penalty on B-Mobile after it failed to provide its service to 75% of the population by February 1st, just like the license says it should.

Telecommunication Commissioner, Nicholas Williams, said that B-Mobile only barely provided to 50% of the people.

This is the second time B-Mobile received a fine for not meeting its licence deadlines.

Commissioner Williams says that he could have increased the penalty to 2.5 million Dollars, but he hopes that B-Mobile will use the extra money to try and meet its deadlines by September of this year.

Currencies

edit

I don't want to joggle your elbow, but wouldn't the w:Australian Dollar be a fairly relevant currency? you might drop the USD in favour of the AUD. - Amgine | t 16:01, 2 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

The fine was issued by the TCSI in US Dollars, I felt it appropriate to keep in the article. BarkingFish (talk) 23:11, 2 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Problems (noticed)

edit
  • I'm not seeing in the sources that bemobile is the second largest provider in the SI.
  • I am seeing that the deadline for 50% was in September, rather than June.

Both issues fixed, thanks for pointing those out, Pi Zero :) BarkingFish (talk) 00:20, 3 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
