True, that logical implication works if you're talking about how many there are, versus how many are known. However, it doesn't work for the event: the event of the number known passing one million is quite different from the event of the actual number passing one million. That is certainly of interest, and one could well imagine the article might have reasonably chosen to mention it. However, our archive policy doesn't allow us to add stuff more than 24 hours after publication. A Wikinews article is a "snapshot in time"; it shows what a story looked like at the time of publication.
