It seems that the prospect of being held up in a detention centre is deterring asylum seekers. - unsigned comment by 220.237.106.97

It's certainly a possibility. Remember that a great many things have happened since the great asylum seeker influces of 1999-2001, such as a major change in the situation in Afghanistan and Iraq, the two major source countries. Also, the governments approach has involved more than just deterrence through inhumane treatment - working with Indonesia to combat the crime of people smuggling, for example. - Borofkin 01:43, 24 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
