Talk:Australian murder victims killed in different ways

Latest comment: 15 years ago by Bidgee

Due to legal reasons in Australia, media outlets can no longer use the accused man's name. (See the bottom of this news article http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/07/01/2290345.htm) Bidgee (talk) 11:59, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Shouldn't we assume he's innocent until proven guilty? Fephisto (talk) 14:35, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've reworded the lead to say that he is accused. Bidgee (talk) 15:06, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
O.k.. Fephisto (talk) 21:03, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Didn't this media outlet already name him in the last article? And even if it were removed, it would still be found in the article's history. Is there anyway for Wikinews to comply with Australian law? -24.141.144.157 15:12, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

removed, I will delete the revisions with the name if that is supported by the Wikinews community. Anonymous101 (talk) 15:17, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I don't think we necessarily need to follow Australian law. Our servers are in the United States.--SVTCobra 15:20, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
The name is still available on the Australian police website, see here. --Brian McNeil / talk 15:21, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
In which at the time he was wanted (State Wide Alert) and the police are no longer naming him on new media releases (No idea why the police site still has the old releases with his name on it thought). However the law here (Australia and New South Wales) means I have to follow it even if I'm submiting it on a overseas server. Bidgee (talk) 15:34, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I agree with SVTCobra seeing as how the Wikinews servers are located in Florida, and Wikimedia has policy of only following laws that are applicable in Florida. I'm going to edit the name back in. Gudeldar (talk) 15:46, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Maybe so but I will not risk going to court if found breaking the law (Section 11 of the NSW Children (Criminal Proceedings) Act 1987.) Bidgee (talk) 02:13, 5 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
