Wikinews talk:Proposal for new namespace "Comments"
I personally think that this is a good idea which follows on from the current Comments system we use. We need community support to implement any change - so discuss what you think should happen in the best interests of the Wiki. --Skenmy(t•c•w•i) 18:10, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
The Current Problem (tm)
editCurrently we use a "poor man's namespace" method of holding these user comments. The proposal is to create an enturely new namespace for these pages, so instead of Talk:Article_name/Comments, we get Comments:Article_name.
The current problem with using the /Comments method is that we have an "add" button at the top of it. This creates /Comments/Comments. Users who are not careful will end up splitting the discussion. A new namespace using similar methods to Talk: would be the best way of removing this problem. In my opinion I think the Comments: namespace will also make it more appealing to users. They will know where to go to discuss, rather than getting confused over where the /Comments goes. They will be able to type in the address without much thinking - much like Talk.
- Umm, that is not true. /comments/comments doesn't happen anymore. Bawolff ☺☻ 18:44, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
As for having the namespace move with article names, this will be presented to the wikimedia techs. If needs be we can write a bot that will automatically move associated Comments: pages, but I suspect that we may be able to use a MediaWiki hook of some sort to get around this minor issue. --Skenmy(t•c•w•i) 18:31, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
- I agree that if we are to continue to do this, a new namespace would be good. Bawolff ☺☻ 18:44, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
- I think this is an excellent idea. ~~ Vagish [wp] [wn] 18:35, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
What would the "Comments_talk" namespace be for? Discussions about the comments page? —Zachary talk 18:44, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
What we need
editWe need a space where people can post their "WTF?" messages to Wackynews and the like, without having a separate namespace Comments: this is tricky and we have to rely on cludges and people remembering to do renames.
Personally I'd like to see the idea of having that space for user comments expanded. Why shouldn't we link to a page where people can leave their opinion on what we write? It is a small step from critic to contributor, and I think we'll get a few of the latter if we welcome the former. --Brian McNeil / talk 19:55, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
- The main problem is the name of it. Currently we have: Talk:, Disscusion:, view opinion: add opinion:, add comment: I can barely keep which is what straight myself, how do we expect random user to? Bawolff ☺☻ 22:51, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
- "Feedback", "Remarks", and "Comments" still stands out? 'Opinions' does seem like a dud. -Edbrown05 10:23, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
- I am opposed to the tab "add Opinion" (or what ever the name will ultimately be). The "add Opinion" tab is instruction creep. Only one tab should be there to make a Comment, or a Remark, or send Feedback on a news story. If it gets messy in there then so be it. -Edbrown05 11:09, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
- It might be the job of people here that know better to go in and say, "Hey", this is how you make a proper post. After that... it's a "free for all". -Edbrown05 11:15, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
- Then there could be users, thinking Markie, that might want to go in there and delete content. -Edbrown05 11:32, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
