Hi edit

Just wanted to drop by to say hi, and welcome to wikinews. I hope you're enjoying your time here, and if you have any questions and concerns please feel free to leave a note on my talk page. Happy editing. Bawolff ☺☻  04:57, 24 April 2006 (UTC) (Why am I talking like an airline stewertisit? Well, I mostly want to try out new welcome notes, and see how the response is. Copyright permission from ibnlive.com edit

We only had issues with the attribution part, at least for the online part of our operations.

For the official part, provided the Wikimedia Foundation sticks to the following conditions, you are allowed to use our content.

1) Proper attribution and link backs of the content sourced from CNN-IBN's website, specified as material published at the URL http://www.ibnlive.com.

2. No images on the website shall be republished on Wikinews since we also use images sourced from agencies and do not have the reuse rights for it.

If you need any further clarifications, do write back.

Yes, does their copyright permit us to alter their material? If not, we can't use it. I've already altered the article, as have others. It could change completely, and there is a comment on the talk page that it does not meet with the site's NPOV policy. --Brian McNeil / talk 20:39, 24 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
As you'll see I deleted one of these articles, it was attributed to the Associated Press. Where is the site's copyright message? I very much doubt they're allowed to pass stuff from AP on to us, can you provide me with an email address for someone who can speak authoritatively on the matter?
As things stand, Wikinews cannot provide any assurances that your attribution and linkback will be retained. Personally, I find the linkback to be a form of promotion for the IBN Live web site and believe duplication of their articles should be disallowed on the basis that it is spam. --Brian McNeil / talk 21:04, 24 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

CNN-IBN edit

Hi Brian, you can e-mail Mr.Shyam Somanadh,Project Manager, Web Operations,CNN-IBN at shyam.somanadh@tv18online.com As for attributions and linkback-we cite sources and provide external links anyway so it shouldn't be much of a problem right?Yes,the AP article was probably not covered by their permission-I realised that only as I was adding the sources template (after creating the article),so I thought I'd just let someone else look into it.However, they might be having the reuse rights for AP material-I forgot to enquire about it-could you please ask them about that?According to the terms displayed on the website we may alter their material after obtaining consent[1].I feel that duplication of their artilcles may be a good idea since there are few India or rather South-Asia related articles on Wikinews and the number of Indian editors here is also low, duplicating CNN-IBN articles may be a time-saving measure.Nontheless,I request you to look into the matter yourself.PVJ  06:36, 25 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have exchanged emails with Mr Somanadh, and to be honest I got the impression he knows less about copyright law than I do - and I don't know a lot :-). I have raised this issue on the water cooler, and input from others can be solicited there. However, I'd actually advise opting for the simple option here. Namely, use CNN-IBN as a source, but write the story in your own words so we avoid attribution nightmares. --Brian McNeil / talk 17:21, 25 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have posted a comment concerning sources from sites such as IBNLive on the Water cooler. --Chiacomo (talk) 04:42, 26 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

spaces after punctuation edit

hi pvj, i noticed that u don't usually add a space after a punctuation mark such as the full-stop or the comma. can u please correct that; spaces after punctution is the accepted practice generally and here on wikinews. thanks. Doldrums 13:59, 26 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

no sorries necessary, we all learn from mistakes. :) i saw the duplicate article on the egypt bombings and have tagged it as a duplicate. u can do the same by adding the template

"{{dupe|name of the duplicate article}}"

to the article text. i'll merge any info in that article (after which it'll be deleted) to Egypt:Twin suicide bombings hit Sinai, and you can continue to add any more info to this article. cheers, Doldrums 14:12, 26 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

RFA edit

Um. Ok. But next time to let you know, only beurocrats can do that. Jason Safoutin 01:07, 22 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Actually anyone can do it, it is just something best left to bureaucrats since only a bureaucrat can really make the final decision. This was a clear case 50% is not enough for adminship. However another vote or two combined with a few invalid votes (all were vaild this time, but many other RfA will have one or two) being thrown out and it could be a very different case. --Cspurrier 02:30, 22 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes, but infact there were only 7 support votes as opposed to 8 oppose votes, the reason being that my supporting vote was invalid since it was cast after the one-week deadline. PVJ  13:24, 22 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Actually there is a tie. Jason Safoutin 13:41, 22 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, it's 7/7, now.
None of the votes were invalid, the 7 days is the min not the max. --Cspurrier 14:33, 22 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
But the counting of votes by the bureaucratic has to take place after 7 days right? To the best of my knowledge there is a maximum period upto which voting can take place-otherwise a candidate (I don't mean Justin) would try and indefinitely prolong the vote in the hope of achieveing consensus support? Nontheless I'm newer here than you so I'll take your word for it. PVJ   15:25, 22 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
As soon as the vote has been moved to the archive the vote is over. As long as seven days is up, it can be moved at any point. I will normally try to let votes where no consensus exists go for about two weeks. Other then cluttering up the RFA page there is no real problem with leaving a vote going indefinitely. Hopefully the person will sooner or later gain enough support votes to become an admin. We make anybody who is trusted by the community an admin, so if it takes a week or a month to determine this level of trust, everybody still wins. --Cspurrier 15:43, 22 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the clarification. PVJ   08:06, 23 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Welcoming users edit

Thanks for helping welcome users... Just a note, when welcomeing others if you use {{subst:hello}} rather than {{hello}}, it will automagically copy the full text of the welcome message to the user's talk page. Using just the straight template may confuse new editors and will slowly increase server load as it's added to hundreds of pages. Additionally, every time someone changes the template, the message on the user's talk page will change -- this too might confuse people. Thanks again, and good luck on your RfA. Let me know if I can answer any questions or assist you! --Chiacomo (talk) 02:57, 26 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

"Support"? edit

On Wikinews:Deletion requests, for a May 24 deletion request, you voted "support". Does this mean you support the article, or you support its deletion? Likewise for the undeletion request; do you support the undeletion? —THIS IS MESSED OCKER (TALK) 23:40, 26 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

IWWC- three finalists edit

We're down to the last three finalists in the IWWC. Normally, the contest would end, and prizes would be awarded, but with only one prize, I suggest we keep the contest going, and do the following:

  • 1st Place: 33.30 euros
  • 2nd Place: 22.20 euros
  • 3rd Place: 11.10 euros

Any objections? Ral315 (talk) 00:16, 7 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree, let the competition continue. PVJ   (Talk) 04:12, 7 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Neutralizer re-blocked. edit

I've reblocked Neutralizer. Next time, I suggest you seek community consensus instead of unilaterally unblocking a user found in violation of many of our policies, most notably using a sockpuppet to circumvent his block. Communication is important, and if you fail to communicate before unblocking users, you'll find yourself angering other admins very easily. Ral315 (talk) 06:09, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Deleting edit

You can't just delete all articles listed on DR, they have to remain there for at least three days. Also once you removed an listing you have to list it in the archives. Brian | (Talk) | New Zealand Portal 08:28, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've fixed the mistakes you've made. Remember, articles listed have to stay for three days (seven for non-articles), then get archived at Wikinews:Deletion requests/Archives. Don't forget to use the {{closed-dr}} template! —THIS IS MESSED OCKER (TALK) 15:37, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

deletion for no sources edit

did this article ("Feminist Gathering in Tehran Violently Interrupted by the Police") go thro' DR? if not, then adding a {{sources}} and listing for deletion is in order, not deleting straightaway. the article has since then been recreated and appears to have a source.

Former U.S. soldier charged with rape, murders edit

Recently, there was a move war and plenty of things got out of hand. In fact, the article ended up deleted and I had to work to restore the article. I protected the page and the talk page from moves to help prevent it from happening again. Since you are capable of moving pages as an administrator, please, do not rename the article until we can settle on a permanent name, because things really went bad. —THIS IS MESSED OCKER (TALK) 22:27, 4 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Please see [3]. The age is mentioned as "1!", which I feel is a typographic error. The writer most likely wanted to type "11" but because the "1" and "!" characters are on the same key, I feel it was meant to be 11. But I believe it appears as "15" when viewed on Internet Explorer, I am not sure though because I use Firefox.PVJ   (Talk) 13:33, 5 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

renaming edit

pvj, why are u renaming the the US soldier arrested for rape and four murders in Iraq page when the discussion and the poll on it is going on? Doldrums 13:07, 6 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

please revert it. the page is protected so non-admins cant rename it. for an admin to rename it to something other than what the consensus is, would be using admin powers to prevail in an editorial dispute, a big no-no.
the current title has the problem: it says "girl" and then says her age is 15-25 (if 25, she's not a girl), while all we know is someone says her age is 15, someone else says 25, we dont know which is true. the two are not the same. the existing title was accurate and covered the gist of the story. Doldrums 13:14, 6 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

This is really unacceptable. Please stop.--Birdmessenger 13:20, 6 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hey,friend. I remember how you unblocked me and I really appreciate that. Please do me another favour and back off this title change at least for awhile. I'd really appreciate it as you're one of the best admins around ,imo, and the project needs you to maintain top collaborative influence. Just my personal request here; as always, "ya' gotta do what ya' gotta do." but I hope you can just let it be for awhile. I'm thinking there will be a brand new story coming up on the raped child. It looks like there is an effort to exhume the body and then the world will know the truth. You'll be needed to help with that explosive story.I'm sure. Neutralizer 13:30, 6 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

re 3rr edit

I have blocked Ealturner for 17 hours (what you served of your block, unless I misadded). I did not block him originally because I did not have diffs for his reverts but I did for yours. While I guessed he probably did violate the 3RR, I did not have time to dig through the very messy history. I did see your note about him, but since you only provided a link to the history I was enable to block based upon that. That is why I asked you to provide evidence of other people violating the 3rr, when I blocked you.

Also unblocking yourself is considered one of the more extreme type of admin abuse, only a few steps bellow outright vandalism. It can be considered grounds for removal of adminship, and is to be avoided. If you need to contact the blocking admin, you can either e-mail them or reply on your talk page. Most admins (all should) watch the talk pages of people they blocked. Also if you want to reatch me and you are blocked, you can e-mail me, icq me, talk to me in irc or ask on one of the other Wikis. No need to reblock yourself, but do not ever do it again :). --Cspurrier 20:29, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

NPOV Issue edit

NPOV, whether it is Wikinews or Wikipedia, refers to the main article. In the discussion sections, however, personal opinion are not only allowed, but actually essential. In effect, I'd like to mediate through this, I think you made some rash (newbie-related) decisions and whilst I don't want everyone pouring out their excuses for the situation that led to an RfDA, I'd like to offer a forum for the apologies and justifications for misguided acts. --Brian McNeil / talk 18:46, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Broken gift edit

Sometme in the late 1960's, or perhaps it was the early 70's, my Uncle Joe with the exclamation that, "the best gifts come in small packages", gives a Christmas present to me that is supposed to measure to distance travelled during a walk.

The gift was in the shape of a hockey puck with a clip so that I could attach it to my belt. My uncle explained to me that after I set the instrument to do calculations based upon what I input as the length of my foot step, it would measure how much ground I traversed on a walk.

Being immediately suspicious of this gift's capability, I asked my uncle, "How can it measure my foot step if it is attached to my belt?"

"It calculates it by the sway of your body," was my uncle's reply.

I took this gift out for a trial run with a play mate buddy of mine, up in the hills where we usually ran around, jumping over rocks and an occasional stream. After the excursion, my uncle's gift said we travelled 1.5 miles.

I knew the gift was wrong but believe to this day the thought was right. -Edbrown05 04:59, 22 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re: Threatens and weighs edit

Hi, PVJ59:

Just an explanation (not an argument) over the verb change in that "non-nuke" ICBM headline. I had written this in a comment when I made the change, but apparently it wasn't included in what you read: The word "threatens" implies a specific promise to strike. "If you do (or don't do) X, we'll do Y." "Weighs" conveys the hypothetical nature of the U.S. position now: "If someone does X, we'd like to have the ability to do Y." "Weighs" seemed more neutral to me since 1) the U.S. hasn't yet taken the decision to reconfigure ICBMs with conventional high explosives and 2) U.S. action is at this point hypothetical.

That's it. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

Dbrekke 17:26, 28 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • I changed it simply because it was talking about the American Secretary of Defense. I didn't see any reason to use the Commonwealth spelling for an American title. I don't think it's worth a nasty message, in any case, since I did it in the process of many other changes to the article—you make it sound like I am systematically changing them, but that's clearly not the case. Maybe this is a burr under your saddle for some other reason, but I found your note a little unnecessarily incivil. --Fastfission 21:13, 28 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
