All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours. Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. Places to go, people to meet Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Write your first article for Wikinews! Use the following box to help you create your first article. Simply type in a title to your story and press "Create page". Then start typing text to your story into the new box that will come up. When you're done, press "save page". That's all there is to it! It is recommended you read the article guide before starting. Also make sure to check the list of recently created articles to see if your story hasn't already been reported upon.

Certainly. Basically, whenever a person

without the flagged revisions tool (which we call "editor" status here) makes a change to an article that has been "sighted", then the change appears in a separate version of the page, called the "draft", that can be accessed by a tab at the top of the page. There is another page, the "stable page", that shows the last sighted version of the page. The draft and stable pages are merged when an "editor" approves the edit. By default, all anonymous users see the stable page by default. This way, there is far less chance of a casual reader seeing vandalism, because the vandalism will remain only on the draft page as it wasn't approved. See WN:FR for more info. One note, though, you might not want to link really basic words, such as "telephone calls" and the like, that the reader can probably be relied on to already understand. Other than that, nice work. Yes, all countries have their own local links to portals. Some major organisations, such as the United Nations, European Union etc. also have local links. Don't worry, it can get a little disorientating

transitioning to Wikinews, but you'll quickly get the hang of it. General idea is - at least the way I put it - to keep people reading news on the site. So, if you have "UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown said..." you'd wikilink UK to United Kingdom (local) and same, Gordon Brown (local) for the first instance. You don't have to wikilink the second occurrence to WP, but you can and sometimes that's good.

Oh, sighted a few of your edits this AM, suspect we'll be

don't see why not, as long as the shorts aren't actually published until the next day arrives. Sometimes, though, it might be better to simply add on to the existing shorts, if it's still a long time to go until midnight UTC. Wikinews Audio

I would be very interested in seeing what plans you have to try and do some work to revive Audio.

I've taken interest in this in the past (done a couple of spoken articles myself) and pushed a general idea of Wikimedia Radio as a broader concept. One person summing up my concept for WMF radio called it "The Free Radio 4" (BBC Radio 4, that is). There is a lot of free audio content, including Spoken Wikipedia articles and music on archive.org.

I've sort-of come full-circle on the idea as I moved almost totally to Ubuntu on my PC. I know quite a number of musicians so was very interested in the audio recording, mixing, and production tools available; looks like I can move at least one person off Windows with this - and make them more productive. I also found IDJC (Internet DJ Console) which — once rebuilt from source — supports both Shoutcast and Icecast broadcasting, in mp3 or ogg.

I'm doing my first test broadcast with http://1radio.org on Monday (0200 - 0400 UTC). This is mostly to test the technology and take advantage of a free chance to do so. Their server streams at 64kbps so is not-good quality; but, if you don't hate The Grateful Dead, tune in and give a post-mortem report. I'd like to think there is an opportunity here for Wikinews to provide 1radio.org with a 5-10 minute news roundup 2 or 3 times a day. --Brian McNeil / ^talk 13:55, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

What I'm planning is something similar

to what is now, but more podcast-like. I can only produce one show a day at most, being only 15 minutes maximum. I'm actually interested to see if these musicians you know could make a new theme for Wikinews Podcast (not such a good name...). I'm planning on basing the new Audio Wikinews on a few podcast I listen to, wihtout the commentary. 1radio seems good. I probably won't broadcast live, but I could make pre-recorded shows. If you want, I'm writing up plans for a show format (the current one is too meh) so keep an eye on the water cooler. I won't be able to listen to your broadcast, but feel free to send it to me. By the way, you do realize that on wikinews, you can enable the script in special:preferences (under gadgets), and you don't have to mess arround with special:mypage/vector.js (unless of course if you want to use a custom configuration). Climate contrarians in Copenhagen

Please join the discussion, if you can do it attentively, if you have some free 30 minutes?

I'm just afraid that this novice user Wikiwide, the author of the article, being probably a scientist (you just look at [http://en.wikinews.org/w/index.php?title=Climate_contrarians_in_Copenhagen&oldid=920889 the first version] of this article), has a very little understanding of what Wikinews is. And probably has lots of other work to do, is not interested, etc. Even the topic of climate contrarians near UNCCC sounds scientific, doesn't it? I think that if you revive this article, it will be very good

• for Wikinews,
• for this user, and
• for the environment
  • (as some of the "skeptics" or
  • just common diesel car drivers can find this article realistic)
