Spoken Wikinews

edit

Thanks for all the Spoken Wikinews Articles done today, Keep up the good work! Brian | (Talk) | New Zealand Portal 01:29, 22 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the compliment! You´re welcome, or to be more precise: The pleasure was mine.

I´ve got two questions, actually three, and I the first one involves, that I do hope, this is the correct way to reply and to post my question to you.

N° 2: By reading loads of help-pages, I found contradicting info. One time I found the words which I use as opener and as ending for the audio files. On another page (http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Wikinews:Audio) I found, that the opener should sound like:

   * Tell people where it's from. Begin your recordings with:
"Article name, from Wikinews, the free news source, at wikinews-dot-org." and end each one with "This sound file and all text in the article are released into the public domain."

Whereas in another help-text I found, that I´m not supposed to read the title of an article. Which is, what I´ve been doing now. And that I should start the audio file with the words: "This is a spoken Wikinews article from wikinews.org, recorded by ..." and end with: "You can find this article and others at wikinews.org. Wikinews is a nonprofit independent news site run by the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation. This recording has been released under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License"

Which version is right? Or are they both ok?

N° 3: On one help page I found that the news should be mixed with the sound-file: WikinewsOpenerTheme2.ogg This should be no problem with audacity, but I wonder, should the whole news article be "underlined" with this sound, or only the opener and the ending? Or should I play the sound file, than my recorded message? This does seem a little bit long to me. I guess, I misunderstood the whole idea with the sound opener in the first place.

Gumboyaya 17:21, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

First, let me start by saying good job! Second, let me clear some questions up.  :).
  1. Most spoken articles are recorded with the opener and closer, however the closer should be modified to read "Creative Commons 2.5 Attribution License", instead of Public Domain (we switched in September of 2005, about the time when our spoken project was gaining its momentum). You can choose to use them or not, but there should be some attribution to Wikinews under our license.
  2. The Wikinews theme is usually only used with News Briefs and Full Reports. For Spoken Wikinews articles, they just take up a lot of time that users would generally not care to hear. But, do whatever makes you comfortable, there's really no restrictions to Audio Wikinews.
Thanks for contributing! I look forward to future releases. --MrMiscellanious (talk) – 17:23, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the advices and the compliment! I´ll change the end at my next audio file contributions. Gumboyaya 18:37, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

RE: and now for something completely different ...

edit

Yeah, MediaWiki is a little weird, but calls all uploaded files "Image:". The reason why the Java player doesn't pick up on them is because it can't read MediaWiki's Image pages, so the URL must point to the actual file's location on the server, and not the image page (in this case, it would be http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e2/Newsbriefs_May_3rd_2006_UTC_1830.ogg). Due to spam control, your addition to the feed was probably also rejected by the filters, as it didn't point to this full URL. You can get the full URL by going to the Image page, and right-clicking on the link to the file, and selecting "copy link location" (or similar). If you need any more help, I lurk around in IRC often ;), or I can respond to my talk page fairly quickly. --MrMiscellanious (talk) – 21:27, 3 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

You can also use Special:Filepath to find the exact url. (may or may not work. Don't use the image prefix on it. (Don't know if thats helpful or not). Bawolff ☺☻  22:37, 3 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Great work

I just wanted to say Great Job, with the audio stuff. I was wondering though, shouldn't template:Audio Upload go on the image description page as it looks a little weird on the article, and have the more concise template:audio on the article? To me the big one just looks a bit out of place on the article. But I don't know what the policies and stuff are at the audio section. Bawolff ☺☻  02:25, 7 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Please add Category: Brief to Transcripts

edit

Hi there! First of all, great job on the audio releases, keep them up! Could I please ask you to add [[Category: Brief]] to the transcripts, though? They stick under "developing articles" if they're not tagged. Thanks! --MrMiscellanious (talk) – 00:24, 8 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Audio Wikinews

edit

I must say. I am really happy to see that someone is taking the time to report news articles via audio. I am very much interested in the future of Wikinews and I am happy that you make the effort to record the news :) I hope that you continue your "quest" (I guess you could say). Great job, and I have listened to nearly every article you recorded :) Jason Safoutin 12:51, 11 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Public apology

edit

The audio file for newsbriefs on May 15th, 17:00 UTC, 2006 is lousy. It didn´t sound that weird, when I listened to it. There will be a reloaded version on this very evening. This can´t be wikinews standard! I´m working on improvement! Gumboyaya 17:12, 15 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Survey about Wikinews

edit

Hello Gumboyaya. A user at de.wikinews has made a survey for a scientific work about Wikinews and professional online journalism. She is still searching for users, who would like to answer the survey (it's in german language). You can find more information here. Thanks and I hope you don't mind that I've spammed your userpage ;) Regards --SonicR 14:15, 1 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the advice. Since I think, people who are doing scientific research should be supported, I will gladly join in and support this survey. Afterall, a couple of years ago, I was a student myself and participated in the development of surveys, and of course I was always happy, when people provided me with "input". :-)
So, no bother, mate! Your "Spam" is very welcome, indeed!

Spelling

edit

I'm going to nitpick (because that's what I do), but "labor" is actually as correct as "labour." I am guessing (only guessing) that English is your second language, so you probably learned British spellings for these words? Especially in articles relating mostly to America, it makes sense that the American spellings would have priority. I didn't revert the edit because it doesn't really matter at all, but I thought you'd be all the happier for knowing. (The same goes for "centre"/"center", "theatre"/"theater", "tonne"/"ton", etc.) Thanks! Fearwig 18:21, 2 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

YIP! You are very right! (2nd language, british influenced)
I wasn´t aware of that.
Hence, thanks very much indeed for your correction!
I´ve learned something (to be honest:) "a-"new :-), ´cause I´ve heard this years ago, but I´ve just forgot it. "Shame on me!" ;-)
Please do not hesitate to correct me further-on!! I DO appreciate support like this A LOT!
Since it helps to broaden my knowledge.

Wikinews briefings RSS Feed

edit

Hi there,

Great work on the audio news broadcasts! I think it's fantastic that Wikinews offers this service. In fact it's been wonderful to see wikinews maturing in so many ways.

One suggestion: when you upload, could you possibly add your briefs to the audio podcast? There are instructions at http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Wikinews:Audio_Wikinews/Releases/News_Briefs/Release

This would be really helpful for receiving your broadcasts, and the RSS feed is available from the main page.

Thanks again for the amazing work!

Cheers, Mark

Thanks for the compliments!
And thank you for your advice!
But, alas!, I seem to be not clever enough to understand the instructions.
Could it be the link I sent, since everything else can´t be done wrongly.
My link was: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikinews/en/b/b5/200606_1800_newsbriefs.ogg
Now I re-uploaded the file to: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b5/200606_1800_newsbriefs.ogg
But it does not seem to work either.
I do appreciate every help I can get.
Cheers mate,
Gumboyaya 18:28, 20 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
It looks like the second link worked (presumably there's a little delay before it shows up in the feed). Maybe this is a bug with the RSS submission mechanism, I'd have thought we should be able to submit links to Wikinews content??? Mark Williamson 23:00, 20 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
I simply try again when I manage to do the newsbriefs. Thanks Gumboyaya 12:58, 21 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Solution found! It does not take 1 minute, but around 15 to 20 Minutes. :-) That´s all.

Theme

edit

During your audio newsbriefs it sounds like you are playing a different version to the Wikinews "Theme song" to the one I downloaded. Is it possible for me to get your copy of the song? nzgabriel 05:43, 13 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sure thing, I found it here:
http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Wikinews_talk:Audio_Wikinews#New_Opener_Music
I wasn´t aware of this new opener up until the moment, when Skenmy used it for his draft for Wikinews Weekly.

New template for audio reports

edit

I was annoyed with the position of the audio box on this article, so I created Template:Audio-left and you now have this version. The new template should be useful for articles where there's an infobox or pictures down the right. I like to see all the graphical elements before the sources and related stuff (including boxes). Anyway, you seem the most prolific recorder so I thought it best to point it out to you. --Brian McNeil / talk 21:39, 16 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your idea, but allow me to be straight forward: I don´t know, whether this just happend with this article, because it is under development. When I clicked on your link(s), I was redirected, and again redirected, because the article was under constant development due to the actual crisis. Hence the outcome I saw was: In the original version, the audio-box was on the right-hand-side, underneath all the relevant graphical elements, and after the actual news-text ended.
In your version the audio-box was in the middle of the ending paragraph of the news-text. Hence the readers "were forced" to read "around the audio-box" to finish reading the article.
I don´t mind, whether the audio-box is left or right of the article, but it should be at the end (or the beginning) of the article. Certainly not within the last paragraph. What I write, might have to do with the fact, that the article is still evolving.
Nevertheless, that is why I would like to ask you, if you´ve got an idea, how to place the "audio-box/template" in a way, that people who are reading the article can read it, without being "stopped" by the template.
Or is it - in the end - simply a question of how I put the template onto a site? And I did not understood how to do it properly so far?
I think, the question is also, whether we offer the read-version of an article right at the start, or at the end of an article. I think, the offer at the top would be more service-orientated: "Read it, or listen to it! Wikinews offers both!" (At least for certain read articles.)
I do hope I could make my point clear. Tara Gumboyaya 00:12, 17 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

any thoughts on this? i think an easy way to do it is create "Latest Audio", etc pages and put redirects to the new files as they are uploaded. are u uploaders willing to do the work each time? (perhaps its better to continue this conversatio on WC) Doldrums 18:07, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Commas in news briefs

edit

Hey Gumboyaya, when you create news briefs pages from now one, do you think you could put a comma between the date and the year, e.g. August 25, 2006? I personally don't mind either way, but the lack of comma is grammatically incorrect and it doesn't allow the news brief to show on date categories, like on Category:July 23, 2006. Anyways, I'm in the process of moving all the ones without commas (luckily there aren't that many of them). —this is messedrocker (talk) 05:34, 25 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the advice! I´ll have an eye on it, from now on.
