How would I take that the wrong way? Anyways, I joined WN a while back, as Urameshi2, however, when I came back, and got interested in it, I was known throughout the internet as 'Thunderhead'. breaking and canadian

Hi,

Are you aware that when you use {{breaking}} and the Canadian news template together the text can run together as both assume they have the full browser width? I'd noted in my edit summary that the Canadian box should be re-introduced when breaking is dropped, I see it's back and it looks messy to me in Firefox. --Brian McNeil / ^talk 19:48, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

I have 'published' an article "Blunket defines the main task for us all" and it seems to have got lost somewhere - I can find it in Recent Changes but nowhere in the news - what have I done wrong? Follow-up articles - how to edit/link to previous reports?

Thanks you for the offer of help. I can't find how to edit followup articles and link them with earlier reports. For example, I did a piece Jack Straw, Leader of the British House of Commons urges Muslim women to drop full veil and in that I reported that Downing Street had distanced itself from Straw's position. This was significant at the time. Later we learn that Bown supports Straw's position, but that Blair refused to answer the direct question about whether or not he does too. It's abit late now, but how do you think these subsequent reports should have been linked to the original one?

I imagine that there is a conventional way of doing this, but there is so much 'ehlp' informaiton that it's difficult o find sch an item. I'd value your advice.

A useful tool is to include a selection of recent articles that relate to the new one. This is called Related news.

This is the template that you would use:

Brown supported Iraq war to save job

seems to have excited some VIPs in Wikinrews but I have responded now. What happens next? Do those who have objected have to authorise publishing or can I remove their objection and publish myself?

Originally I put 'scared Brown' but have removed the adjective. Apart from the Diaries themselves, this certainly was single sourced but, looking at many other articles that's not a crime. I have added another soource.

I was upset by the non-NPOV accusation, because I had been careful to include Brown's response.

As you know I am a newbie. so a word of friendly advice now would not go amiss!

As you know every Wikinewsie -including myself- gets upset about NPOV disputes. We all have a right to our opinion but in this case of a dispute we could discuss it on the talk page or just take away the tag and make it more NPOV. USDA raids hog farm

I wrote the article about the USDA raiding the Henshaw's hog farm in September. I contacted the Henshaws personaly to verify the reports. This story was not getting any press and I thought this is what Wikinews was for. My father just moved to Virginia in late September and said that the story is just now getting out. Especialy now we need to verify and replace this story. Is there anyway to recover what was deleted? I will check my files...

Commas and Numbers

Wikinews capitilization in Mediawiki:Sidebar

I reverted you as it doesn't seem to make much difference except in the id="p-W/wikinews" field. If we want to capitilize it, it could be acomplished in CSS (see View->page style->Datrio+MrM for example in firefox for example. if your using Opera,hunt through menus, if your using MSIE get a real browser/ edit special:mypage/monobook.css). IRC

FellowWikiNews, I'm sorry things haven't worked on IRC. The CGI IRC is a piece of shit; do not use it. If you are allowed to install software on the computer you have, get an actual IRC client (such as mIRC), then once you install and load mIRC, type /server irc.freenode.net -j #wikinews-en and you will be on the live chat in no time. ★MESSEDROCKER★ 02:20, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Fount/font

Thanks for all you help improving several of the articles I have started.

We seem to disagree about the Times article. Re the title - I took my lead from wikipedia where The Times seems sufficient (though I forgot to capitalise the article! But re the fount/font. I know this former is archaic but it is the spelling usd in the report by the paper's designer and out of respect for the soruce I judged it proper to use it, the English spelling, for an English paper. It spelling has been changed, inspite of my remarks on the discussion page explaining this but no explanation has been given by the editors who made the change. I am a newbiew and get quite confused by the wiki protoco; at times. Please would you kindly explain the grounds for making this change or revert it to 'fount' :-) Fentonrobb 09:09, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Although I do not really agree with your argument, I have added 'or font' and revertd all else to 'font'. But I think there is need for some policy here. I ran into a similar problem when someone complained that I had used English spelling when quoting an English speaker verbatim. _Apologies - this belongs, of course, to wikinews. Style

Hi, I totally disagree with your thoughts on reverting to the headline "State funeral approved by Canadian House of Commons" from "Canada's Commons OKs State Funerals." But, I'm not going to argue, fuss & fight with you over it. I think the head as written - and the article - both need serious attention. Wikinews writers (for the greater part) do not meet professional news writing standards. Simply put, they're atrocious. The head "Canada's Commons OKs State Funerals" states the important facts. The wording "State funeral approved by Canadian House of Commons" is excessively lengthy, and from the perspective of the information contained in the article, wholeheartedly accurate. That is, there will be funerals, i.e. more than one (three, to be precise). So, verb tense is one of the most egregious errors present in the head as it is reverted. I understand you're upset because it's your original work, that is, you started the article. In that sense, you feel a sense of pride and ownership in it. Of course, that sense of pride is good. But an editor's job is to make the original work better. And, as the page states, if you don't want it edited mercilesly (which I did) don't post it. But I'm not gonna' fuss & fight with you over it. It doesn't meet professional standards, and certainly doesn't meet any standard of writing (much less news) of which I'm aware. When you have the interest or desire, I recommend becoming familiar with the AP Style Writer's Guide, or as it's now called the AP Stylebook. http://www.apstylebook.com/ So, have at it and enjoy your Thanksgiving!
