No problem, I really enjoy following world issues and current affairs. All I need to do now is learn the 'ins and outs' of Wikimedia Diodesign 21:08, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)

A challenge for you edit

Hi Diodesign,

welcome to Wikinews! Looking at your profile, I think I have a perfect challenge for you: get a Wikinews story featured on Slashdot. We've made some attempts to get a story on Slashdot in the past; these are chronicled on Wikinews:Story propagation. Note that it may be a good idea to link to an old revision of the article for the submission, so that even if the article is vandalized, visitors only see that specific version. See the aforementioned page for examples.

The reason I think this is important is that it will still take quite a while until we have political events from around the globe covered in an appropriate fashion, but I believe we could relatively quickly build the user base to get the field of IT news covered, and being slashdotted (especially if we can do it on a regular basis) might help a great deal with this. Any cool tech/gadget story that hasn't been everywhere else already might work, especially if it includes some amount of original reporting. Are you up for the challenge?--Eloquence 22:45, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

An interesting challenge. I've had an article of mine linked to from Slashdot before [1], and countless of times on OSNews and other sites.
I will accept this challenge, because I realise that Wikinews is an amazing (yet experimental) concept but it needs a critical mass. If we appear more and more in community sites such as Slashdot, people will start turning to us. From experience, this'll take time so don't expect an overnight success. One thing to note is that I have my final undergraduate degree exams in 4-5 weeks time, so I won't initially be as pro-active as I'd liked. However after that, I'll be spending the summer freelancing (hopefully), and have plenty of time to do original reporting for Wikinews. I'll definitely see what I can do over the next month. Thanks for offering me the challenge Diodesign 23:18, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Wonderful, thank you so much. Good luck with your exams!--Eloquence 05:00, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Israeli/Palestine subject edit

I was surfing around for a story to write and thought of you when cruised this page. It is a pretty good source for as an alternative to AP and Reuters. But also, I found this picture from the INTERNATIONAL PRESS CENTER-Palestine. I bet it is fair game for use in a news story where a Palestinian claim is being beat up on by the Israli's.

Thanks for the stories you've written and the work done on others. -edw 22:55, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the link - I'll keep it in mind. I'm pretty careful about my sources because the Israeli/Palestine conflict is so contentious - certainly from experience, in other articles written or edited, for example. Diodesign 23:51, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)
How interesting! I just added that mirror source to the the hand shake story here. I now realize the link for the publication goes to Wikipedia — I think I'll change that.-edw 00:24, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Heck, it still links to Wikiepedia! lol... oh my, I never knew that! -edw 00:29, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Congratulations! edit

I knew you were the right person to do it. I hope you'll get us many more Slashdottings!--Eloquence 00:00, 11 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
