On Thursday, residents of a suburb of the Syrian capital of Damascus found an American man wandering barefoot. The man identified himself as American Travis Timmerman to CBS. As Syrian rebels captured Damascus over the weekend, they vowed to dismantle Syria's prisons, which have been criticized for their harsh conditions.

Timmerman was freed on Monday after the city fell to the rebels, resulting in the ousting of Syrian leader Bashar-al Assad. BBC reported that Timmerman recounted his rescuers being "hammer-wielding men" armed with AK-47s. He said his experience in prison "wasn't too bad".

Timmerman was a resident of the US state of Missouri, and said he had left the prison with many people, and was attempting to reach Jordan when he was intercepted by the residents.

Timmerman had gone missing in June after entering Syria on foot from Lebanon. He had last been seen at a church in Budapest, Hungary. He claimed his reason for being in Syria was "spiritual purposes" pertaining to his Christian faith.

Timmerman had spent months confined in a Syrian prison before the rebellion in the city.
