Name redesign

I'm tagging this so we don't lose track of it if it doesn't get resolved immediately. {{editprotected}} I'd like to generalize this so it doesn't assume a "family name, personal name" format. That works for many English-speaking parts of the world, granted, but is by no means the only arrangement. Family name sometimes comes first without inversion (so, no comma); and sometimes there is no family name so some other qualification is called for and might not be the primary sort key. @Acagastya: You were saying it would make sense to list your name and your father's name. In that case, what should the top line read, instead of the evidently wrong "Chandrakant, Agastya"? --Pi zero (talk) 16:35, 24 November 2017 (UTC)

In India, middle name is generally the father's name. To be precise, "Chandrakant" is my father's name and my complete name should be "Agastya Chandrakant". However, the concept of maiden name, middle name and family name is different in other countries. Like for example, "Fa Mulan" is a Chinese name where "Fa" is the family name and there is no comma in between. If there is going to be a change in the template, I think First Last would be the simplest, and probably the best way to do it, where Last can be father's name, last name, surname, or native place name [Yes, in southern India, people also use their native place name as their last name]. (And there should be no concept of middle name in the template). But is it necessary to take two strings for first name and last name? Can't we use one string for the name, letting one choose what they want to include (middle name, or what ever). This reminds me of Milan Piqué Mebarak. Son of Gerard Piqué and Shakira Mebarak. Spanish names have a different concept.

Odd how often this has come up for me this past year. I would suggest, instead of firstname lastname or anything similar, that a single "name" field be used. This can avoid some of the many conflicts such as Iberian, patronym, matronym, nordic, or many other name-formatting styles. <joke class=genealogy> Also, whatever you do, do not attempt to automate the inclusion of nicknames à la Usename 'Nickname' Familyname </joke>- Amgine | t 23:11, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

Whatever we do, we should try and make it universal, so that we don't have to change it again for another naming convention like Iberian naming customs for example. --SVTCobra 18:56, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
