I don't know enough terms for understanding this. Some quotes from sources:

  • Lotus driver Pastor Maldonado was unable to match teammate Grosjean's performance and was knocked out in Q1 by less than a tenth of a second.
  • Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso were once again out of Q2, the Briton finishing down in 18th position in the quickest McLaren.
  • Nico Rosberg secured his fifth pole position in a row after beating Lewis Hamilton to the top spot in qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix.
  • Nico Rosberg claimed his fifth Formula 1 pole position in a row by narrowly defeating Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton in qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos.

Is this a participation in the real competition -- Q1, Q2, etc being the consequtive rounds before a final -- or is it an ongoing effort into determining who qualifies for participating in the competition? If the former, does the article need to be more clear about which rounds are over and which aren't, and which rounds are the article subject?
