Replacing image
edit{{editprotected}} Hello! Please replace JavaLocatie-1-.png with Java location inkscape.svg. PNG versions lacks essential information and will be deleted soon. Thanks! --Hedwig in Washington (talk) 03:26, 13 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Hedwig in Washington: Since the old image has already been deleted, we have no way to tell whether the replacement is permissible under our archive policy. --Pi zero (talk) 12:12, 13 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Pi zero: I've restored the file temporarily to enable people to look at it. It has a timer set for two days from now after which it will tag itself for deletion. I hope that helps. Green Giant (talk) 12:33, 13 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Blood Red Sandman, Green Giant, Billinghurst: Here we go again. There's been a "universal image replacement", of File:Java Locator.svg for File:Java location inkscape.svg, which had been substituted four years ago for File:JavaLocatie-1-.png. Though we don't let bots replace these sorts of things on our archives as a matter of policy, this one was replaced by a well-meaning global sysop (an accident possibly, as I wouldn't have thought we've clear global sysops for en.wn).
At this point, if I were trying to judge this, I'd actually want to see both deleted images. :S --Pi zero (talk) 12:17, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Pi zero: I haven't looked at the original file that was a redirect, the replacement that I did was a crude map of the Indonesian archipelago with the island of Java highlighted in green, and it is replaced with a tidier map of the archipelago with Java now in red. Request was made by a highly experienced idWPer who was calling it like for like in context, simply a higher quality replacement. If the replacement is a problem, I can just change the redirect to the new file, in which the replacement would take place silently, and you would be unaware of any change at Commons. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:30, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
- ... and apologies for editing through a full-protection. I will admit to not reading the block message properly and simply presumed it was soft-protection, as I was doing a clean up of the remaining number of xwiki links that didn't get done by the bot. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:36, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
- I’m at work at the moment and have only had a quick look at the deleted files. I think the best way forward would be to upload the files locally so Wikinewsies can have a look and come to an informed decision. If Billinghurst is unable to do this, I’m happy to do it but I won’t be able to access a personal computer (as opposed to my work PC) for another 5-6 hours. Green Giant (talk) 12:44, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Green Giant: Well... it sounds kind of resource-heavy to me, creating an additional copy of each image on the Foundation's servers... but... admittedly I'm a bit behind the times in resource-consciousness; the first computer I worked on had, iirc, about 48k of internal memory and a paper tape reader/punch (mechanical, not these optical readers I've heard they use for paper tape now).
- @Billinghurst: I realize the wiki platform interface is, shall we say, not very good at helping users with elevated cross-wiki privs to track these sorts of small over-steps. These things happen. I've no doubt, btw, the replacement is reasonable for encyclopedic purposes, which would apply by extension to most projects in the sisterhood; the question is only whether it's within-bounds for en.wn, which has narrower tolerances on image replacement in published articles. It seems like we're close to a grey area in that regard, which is why I'd be interested to hear Blood Red Sandman's take on this and also would be interested to see the precedent set by the size (large? small?) of the earlier replacement that was done here. --Pi zero (talk) 13:14, 18 June 2019 (UTC)

Comment As a general comment about your rules, and whether the file is acceptable. With your community having blocked image replacement bots, from making the changes, and then with the Commons requirement of having a redirect, wouldn't the community then be be unaware of any changes that take place at Commons that effect the story here, and this having been the case for a while? It is only when someone makes the change that the commentary can appear about requirement for preservation. If a static image is that important, then I wonder why that your used images are at Commons. — billinghurst sDrewth 05:53, 19 June 2019 (UTC)
