Use of 'hoax'?Edit

If an agency reported it wrong, simply state "reports from ... have incorrectly confirmed the presence of George H. W. Bush" (or similar). To use the word 'hoax' is suitable for other items, such as threats, etc. --Mrmiscellanious 10:35, 29 August 2005 (UTC)

I agree, a hoax is intentionally misleading people. StuRat 10:40, 29 August 2005 (UTC)
Well AAP fell for what was essentially a hoax press statement.
As long as that is really what happened, i.e. we can tell the press statment was a hoaxand not a mistake. In particualr one can normally namet he origin of a hoax. Nyarlathotep 19:06, 29 August 2005 (UTC)

I can't really see how it's not a "hoax" - false website was set up and a false press release sent to distribute information that's not true. Dan100 (Talk) 21:36, August 29, 2005 (UTC)

Let me revise my earlier statement. It's not a hoax from the pt of view of the newspapers, who thought they were reporting the truth. However, it is a hoax from the pt of view of those who set up the web site and press release to intentionally mislead people. StuRat 22:29, 29 August 2005 (UTC)

So it was a hoax. -- Phyzome is Tim McCormack 11:19, August 31, 2005 (UTC)

Depending on the context, yes or no. The headline "30A protest network pulls hoax on newspapers and public" would be correct, but the headline "Newspapers pull hoax on public" would not be correct. The current title doesn't say who pulled the hoax, so is OK, since the body of the story makes it clear. StuRat 17:58, 31 August 2005 (UTC)
