Talk:'Let's finish this job': US President Joe Biden announces 2024 reelection bid
Notes
editMostly, this uses the AP and NBC sources; if I remember correctly, The Hill is only for Obama's tweet, FiveThirtyEight for statistics (naturally), and POLITICO for Harris' remarks at Howard. Heavy Water (talk) 23:06, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
- @SVTCobra: How about placing the video in an external links section, since the text of the sources verifies all quotes from it in this article? Heavy Water (talk) 23:58, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
- I did move it, but now I am looking at your quotes. You seem to have longer quotes directly from the video, rather than the way AP and NBC chopped them up. Thoughts? SVTCobra 00:15, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
- I've made an effort to combine them and synthesized quotes that only one source had... Heavy Water (talk) 00:22, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, but that can be very misleading. Especially stringing together paragraphs with open quotation marks. I am in particular talking about the "MAGA extremists" and "cutting Social Security". This is not in AP or NBC in this order. SVTCobra 00:30, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
- Well, NBC said: "...'MAGA extremists are lining up' to cut the social safety net and take away personal liberties.
- "Cutting Social Security..." with nothing between. But I have no problem with prefixing the "Cutting Social Security..." and "This is not a time to be complacent..." paragraphs with "He said" or something of the sort. Heavy Water (talk) 00:36, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
- I cannot finish tonight. You can remove the {{under review}} if you think someone else will pick up the reins before I am back online. Cheers, SVTCobra 00:58, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
- OK. It is a very long one, after all. Heavy Water (talk) 02:07, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
- As you have seen. I am still online. The truth is, I am too intoxicated to do a serious review, but I can still ban a troll. SVTCobra 02:19, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

@Heavy Water:, firstly, what did you use from FiveThirtyEight? NBC had their own poll and the Gallup poll. Politico had the Ipsos-Reuters poll. I was able to verify everything without FiveThirtyEight. Anyway, that matters not. This post is because I wanted to expand a little on 'synthesized quotes' beyond what I said above and in my review below. I will use a specific example from this article. In your article as submitted you had this: "This is not a time to be complacent [...] This is our moment [to] defend democracy. Stand up for our personal freedoms. Stand up for the right to vote and our civil rights [...] That's why I'm running for reelection [...] Let's finish this job. I know we can." However, the quote from the NBC source (and indeed the video itself which I watched) was: "This is not a time to be complacent. That’s why I’m running for re-election." You interjected no fewer than three statements or sentence fragments in the middle of two sentences which Biden uttered back-to-back in the video. While what you did did not run afoul of WN:NPOV or change the sentiment of what Biden was saying, it can be rife for abuse. Wikinews should not tolerate synthesizing quotes, in my opinion. Allowing this would open a door where an editor could materially alter what the quoted person was saying or trying to say. We can't just re-order statements. I hope this makes sense. Cheers, --SVTCobra 21:21, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
- @SVTCobra: FiveThirtyEight was for the specific unemployment and inflation statistics. This makes sense and I'll avoid it in the future. Heavy Water (talk) 21:24, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
- Yikes, I missed that second half of the paragraph. I reworded slightly. SVTCobra 21:37, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

editTrying to get this done, but may take a bit. Busy at work.--Bddpaux (talk) 16:46, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
- I am picking up where I left off, now. SVTCobra 18:29, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

Review of revision 4723775 [Passed]

Revision 4723775 of this article has been reviewed by SVTCobra (talk · contribs) and has passed its review at 20:34, 27 April 2023 (UTC).
Comments by reviewer:
It is refreshing to see such a long article once in a while. It did take me quite some time to review, but that goes with the territory. For constructive criticism, I have the following: I disapprove of the way you 'synthesized' quotes (as already mentioned in talk above). And in my opinion, you have a habit of creating run-on sentences, especially by using a semi-colon to separate things which should be two sentences. The reviewed revision should automatically have been edited by removing {{Review}} and adding {{Publish}} at the bottom, and the edit sighted; if this did not happen, it may be done manually by a reviewer. |

- Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. It was long, but it was actually easier to write than the Air France one (no technical details). Heavy Water (talk) 20:50, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
Edit
edit{{editprotected}} "First Lady Jill Biden said in December, she was" shouldn't have a comma. Heavy Water (talk) 22:53, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
- Are you sure? It looks grammatically correct to me. SVTCobra 14:37, 15 June 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah. The way I was taught was to replace the comma with "and" to see if it fits. "First Lady Jill Biden said in December and she was," doesn't make sense. Heavy Water (talk) 17:00, 15 June 2023 (UTC)
