Talk:'Australian Values' to be taught in NSW schools

Latest comment: 18 years ago by Nyarlathotep

"Australian Values" might need more qualification, such as putting quotes around it in the title. The paragraph beginning "Adults will not escape ..." could really be more explicit.. or made into a seperate cross-linked article if enough is known & someone cares about it. Agreed, I think the term needs quotes, or even "So-called" at the beginning. I'd also be interested to know how "Australian Values" differ from New Zealand Values, or American Values, or British Values, etc. - Borofkin 22:50, 22 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
I have changed it. So-called is required. Australian values in this case are what the NSW government believes them to be. As for the rest, there isnt much information on how "adults will be made to respect authority". In the interests of NPOV, I dont think I will comment on what I think of the idea - Cartman02au (Talk)(AU Portal) 04:28, 23 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
"So-called" is absolutely not required when you are quoting. It gives the exact opposite result you were intending, resulting in the newsource sneering at the notion of 'Australian Values'. Why not just source the quote in the headline by using a colon afterwards? - unsigned comment by 24.94.246.41
Agreed, I think that the quote-marks are enough. - Borofkin 05:11, 23 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
You don't need to explain "Australian values" as such words are just rhetorical devices used to avoid being specific. w:American values has no Wikipedia article, it just redirects to w:Culture of the United States, as the closest available subject; note the word values does not occur on that page in any serious context. Laws OTOH always mean something; and the article does explain that. Should the V be lowercase? Nyarlathotep 20:05, 23 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
