On Sunday, English heavy metal band Iron Maiden announced that Simon Dawson would replace Nicko McBrain as the band's drummer,[Source] after 42 years with the group, which formed in 1975.

Dawson plays drums in British Lion, which is the hard rock side project of Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris.[Source]

McBrain played his final performance with the group at a concert in São Paulo, Brazil.

McBrain said he was planning to continue with "a variety of projects" moving forward.

He suffered a stroke in 2023, which paralyzed him in his right side below his shoulder. He recovered through extensive therapy and returned to touring four months later, though he admitted having difficulty performing some of the more complex cuts from the band's catalogue, and some songs were even omitted from live sets to accommodate his ailment.

McBrain had also been previously diagnosed with stage 1 laryngeal cancer in 2020, which he had removed through surgery.

According to Iron Maiden band manager Rod Smallwood, McBrain's replacement has already been chosen, and would be announced at a later date.

Greg Kennelty of Metal Injection called McBrain's retirement "a major moment in metal history".
