Is New Delhi and indeed the Union Cabinet not in the territory of Category:Delhi? --SVTCobra 06:17, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Looking at the question you have asked, talk page of that category would be the best place to ask this question.

Not really. I am wonDERing why IT was REMOVED from THIS [India: Cabinet approves capital punishment for rape of girls under age twelve] article. --SVTCobra 06:47, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Delhi is a Union Territory of India. Union territories in India (or speaking politically, Union of India) are those geographical areas which belong to the union, but are not in any state; just like Washington DC is not in any US State. New Delhi is a district and capital city, part of NCT Delhi. NCT Delhi is the union territory of India, and part of Delhi NCR. Delhi NCR is a collection of districts of three states and all the districts in NCT Delhi. this should explain.

parts of the copied text removed to keep the discussion focused on what is important.

27 articles -- looks like fixing the name should not be that hard. Need to shift to Delhi NCT; and make sure it is different from Delhi NCR. Let's flag this for time being, and do this later, next week.

I respectfully disagree It would be like changing Category:Pennsylvania to Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, OR Category:Rhode Island to State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. --SVTCobra 07:05, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
I don't know about those US states, and I do not care because they are not involved in the ambiguity of Delhi NCT, New Delhi or Delhi NCR. The closest analogy I can think is of Taliban (but one was not proper subset of the other)

and now that you have mentioned, there should be redirects to respective categories, if they are not created as of now.

This is something I wanted to discuss when KSA banned Israeli chess players.

Delhi NCR, aka CNCR, is a metro area that is used for practical purposes just like Metropolitan New York City extends into New Jersey and Metropolitan Copenhagen extends into Sweden, an entirely differenT country. --SVTCobra 07:18, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

I can list at least one article which (btw was an OR by an IP) mentions NCR. Actually two.

Think about it, we have Middle Eas, even though it is not a continent.
103.254.128.130 (talk) 07:29, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
OK, but if we split this category into TWO, how many of the 27 articles would end up in both categories? I bet it will be almost all of them. Then there is no useful reason to do so. --SVTCobra 08:34, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
All articles in Mysore category are in Karnataka category, but that does not mean Mysore's cateogry should not exist.

That's OK. But are all Karnataka in Mysore? --SVTCobra 09:08, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

this affects NCR; this thing was under effect only in the NCT.
223.237.235.156 (talk) 09:13, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

thoSE are Not Wikinews articles. If the day should come that we have three articles specifically related to NCR planning, then we can add that category. It is an urban planning area, Not an administrative division. --SVTCobra 09:28, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
I thought we were discussing the useful reasons; well wait until I write one more story about NCR and then we will have a category.

NCR is valid as a topic category, just Not as a Geo category. Cheers, --SVTCobra 13:09, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

  • I would have no objection to renaming this category to "Delhi NCT". That seems to me a useful way to make clear precisely what the category refers to.
  • We have a Category:Greater Manchester; it is a precisely defined, legally meaningful region. If Delhi NCR is similarly defined and legally meaningful — which afaict it is — then it would be a geocat, just as Greater Manchester is. As a geocat, it would contain everything that goes in Delhi NCT, which in turn would contain everything that goes in New Delhi. Because that's how we handle geocats; it's the reason why, if we have an article about East Podunk, Kentucky, it would go in geocats Kentucky, United States, and North America. Regarding this handling of geocats, I would note that
  • it is driven by technical considerations to do with DPLs.
  • it also has drawbacks.
  • it is a genuinely difficult design challenge, to try to come up with an alternative arrangement that doesn't give up the important technical advantages of the status quo, and doesn't increase the burden of categorizing articles (which, like all overhead tasks here, always needs to be minimized).
  • it is a design challenge I've been meditating on for years.
  • it is probably not a topic worthy of much "wailing and gnashing of teeth" atm.

Return to "Delhi NCT" page.
