England advanced to the semi-final stage of the 2007 Rugby World Cup with a 12-10 victory over Australia in the first quarter-final of the tournament at Stade Vélodrome, Marseille, France. Jonny Wilkinson kicked the defending champions to victory with four penalties, in a repeat of the 2003 final.
Stirling Mortlock opened the scoring for Australia with a penalty, but missed two other chances to extend their lead early on. England went ahead after two penalties from Jonny Wilkinson, however Australia regained their lead as Lote Tuqiri scored a try in the 33rd minute. Australia led 10-6 at half time as Wilkinson missed two opportunities to reduce the deficit.
Australia failed to score in the second half, with Berrick Barnes and Chris Latham both missing drop goal attempts. Jonny Wilkinson kicked two penalties to give England a two point lead despite missing two more opportunities with the boot. Stirling Mortlock missed a late penalty that would have won the match for Australia.
England, who have improved after faltering early in their campaign, hung on to reach the semi-finals. They will play France, who defeated New Zealand 18-20, in a repeat of the 2003 semi-final.
