-y vs. -ie edit

As a general rule, use -ie to create a noun form, use -y to create an adjective form. e.g. he's a beasty boy, but a cute wee beastie.

Yangtze edit

Not Yangtse, Yangzi.

Yardie, Yawdie edit

Note capitalisation. Term is strongly deprecated as it is nearly invariably misapplied; use only in direct quotes.

yakuza edit

Lower case, Japanese criminal organisation. Term may be singular or plural, may refer to the organisation or a member.

Yangon edit

Not Rangoon.

Yavlinsky, Grigory edit
year edit

Use the simple number, e.g. 2011, not "the year 2011". To indicate a range of years, use 2004-11, not 2004/11 nor 2004-2011.

When referring to the academic stage, year 1, year 2, ... year 12.

yes campaign edit

Not Yes campaign or "yes" campaign.

"yes" vote, "no" vote edit
yesterday edit

In general, avoid. See rant at Relative time.

yoghurt edit
yours edit

yuan edit

Not renminbi.

Yugoslavia edit

Yule, Yuletide edit

Capitalise.

yuppie edit

Lowercase in both noun and adjective form.
