jail, jailor edit

Preferred over gaol, gaoler which are historic terms in almost all uses. Note that in many regions youth cannot legally be "jailed", but are sentenced to detention in a youth detention centre.

jail sentences edit

Sentences can be applied concurrently or consecutively, and time served may be given a multiple before being subtracted from the time to be served. It is meaningless to sum the sentences of multiple defendants; list each sentence separately.

jargon edit

Like journalese and slang, jargon should be strictly avoided. Where use is required always include a considered explanation for readers.

JavaScript edit

The client-side web scripting language is spelt with CamelCase. Consider a brief explanation when using the term.

Jerusalem edit

Also use al-Quds for Palestinian portions, the Arabic name for the disputed city. Use lower case west/east Jerusalem. Never use Jerusalem as a metonym for Israel; it is not recognized internationally as the Israeli capital by United Nations Security Council Resolution 242, and its status is one of the central controversies of the Middle East.

Do not use the Wikipedia article about Jerusalem as a reference; like the city, it is currently dominated by a pro-Israeli POV.

jibe edit

Avoid this spelling. See gibe, gybe.

jihad edit

Roman font, lower case, but use cautiously. Jihad is a noun for the concept "struggle", which is not necessarily violence directed outward but also the personal internal struggle to live a holy life. At the same time, a fundamentalist view of Islam includes jihad both to protect the ummah (the world Islamic community) and to expand Islam.

Johns Hopkins University edit

No apostrophes.

judgment edit

Not judgement.

junta edit

By definition the ruling military council, so do not use tautologies as "ruling military junta."

justify edit

Do not use when you mean defend; use defend.
