Wikinews talk:Hotline

Latest comment: 16 years ago by Flrn in topic Languages

This, my wiki-friends, has potential. Imagine a million people with the Wikinews Hotline number in their mobiles. We would have reporters on every corner. - Borofkin 07:09, 3 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

And are you going to be the person who transcribes each and every call and turn them into articles?
However, this has had precisely zero calls in the first fortnight of existence, so it's probably not going to become a big issue... Dan100 (Talk) 22:59, 5 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Cost?

edit

How much does it cost if you live in the UK? Thorpe89 18:46, 3 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Calls to +1-202-742-5918 are charged as long distance calls (to the US) so prices would vary depending on whether you're calling from a mobile or landline, who your service provider are, etc. I think Wikinews should look into setting up a UK 0800 hotline, seeing as quite a few Brits use Wikinews, but it's probably too expensive. Well, I don't want to pay for an 0800 number. What if I provided an 0871 number — would that be reasonable enough for most Brits? -- IlyaHaykinson 06:47, 18 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ok, for anyone following ther discussion I created a number in the UK that forwards here. -- IlyaHaykinson 08:02, 25 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

How is this ran?

edit

Is this a skypein number? I was just wondering how it was setup. --Tom 09:08, 7 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Please see Wikinews:Hotline/Collaboration for more info on how this is run. -- IlyaHaykinson 16:59, August 9, 2005 (UTC)

Text Number

edit

I think this service COULD work well although it would make sense to convert it to a text line only, using SMS. The BBC aparently do a good service. That would work very well. Just some ideas, any more than post them heres. Simon Stirrat (streetmagix)

Suggestion

edit

Can I suggest that a national rate 0870 UK number be added to the list. This can be obtained for free, and can be directed to an Open Source VOIP Asterisk server. When this technology has been put in place, then users can 'man' the hotline by simply connecting to the Asterisk server with a VOIP hardphone or softphone. Total cost of this solution (given the availability of a free internet connected server) is nothing.

In fact, without using the server, I can impliment the solution for zero cost at all but only an answerphone message will be available. When a message is left the voicemail will be emailed in a WAV format to a designated person.

If you want to, Go for it. Currently messages are emailed to a email list in wav format. Bawolff ☺☻  01:37, 17 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Great !

edit

That's awesome ! I was recently at a demonstration which turned violent, and I had no way to inform people who would have been interested... I often have entire days without an internet connection. Now I will always have this European hotline number in my cellphone ! I hope that these numbers will stay, and that some people will dedicate their wikitime to listening to messages... Keep up the good work :-) Nicolas1981

SIP/H323 machine?

edit

It would be nice if it is possible to make some SIP/H323 service for hotline... Maybe on some WMF server? --millosh (talk (sr:)) 12:15, 9 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

OGG or WAV

edit

The article says .WAV files, but the new submissions list displays .ogg files? I'm confused. 62.20.156.137 22:56, 4 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

They get emailed to us in wav, but we upload them in ogg as ogg is way smaller then wav. Bawolff 23:11, 4 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Removed UK hotline number

edit

I didn't want to pay for the UK hotline number for the next year. It's been deactivated. -- IlyaHaykinson 07:26, 9 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Damn. I was keeping that stored on my phone in case anything interesting happened near me. Oh well... --Saxsux 18:06, 25 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I might pick up a new UK number when I setup the AudioWikinews Newsline server this summer, could easily setup a similar system for UKers (and since I need it anyway, would pick up a number in AUS or NZ) terinjokes | Talk 16:41, 10 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

1 (866) old-hank

edit

Don't know if you realize this but Phonetic.com says that the free # translates to "old hank". "Call Old Hank with your news"? . --w:User:Jmchuff 13:41, 19 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
