Wikinews:The use of AI in generating content
- This is a proposed Wikinews guideline. Please feel free to make any changes you feel necessary, or discuss it on the talk page.
This guideline outlines the appropriate use of large language models (LLMs), commonly called artificial intelligence (AI), in the creation of content on Wikinews. It aims to safeguard the pillars of good writing; the principles of accuracy, neutrality, and verifiability that underpin all content while embracing innovative technologies to support contributors.
Permissible Uses of AI
editAI tools can be employed in the following ways to assist contributors in their work:
Assisting with drafting: AI may be used to generate drafts for content, helping authors with structure or content suggestions. However, these drafts must always be critically reviewed and fact-checked by human contributors before submission.
Proofreading and style suggestions: AI tools that check for grammar, spelling, and adherence to style guides are permitted, as long as the final decisions on wording and style remain human-led.
Data analysis: AI tools can be used to analyze and summarize large datasets (e.g., statistical reports, polls) to support reporting. The source of the data must be clearly referenced, and any interpretation or conclusions drawn must be reviewed by human contributors.
Prohibited Uses of AI
editAI should not replace human judgment or the collaborative editing process. The following uses of AI are prohibited:
Fully automated article generation: Articles generated solely by AI, without substantive human editorial oversight, are not permitted. Wikinews articles must always reflect human-reviewed accuracy, neutrality, and verification of sources.
AI-generated sources: AI cannot be used to generate sources or citations. All facts presented in articles must be backed by verifiable and reliable human-generated sources.
Maintaining Editorial Integrity
editHuman editorial control: The editorial process, including pre-reviews and final reviews, must always be carried out by human contributors.
Accuracy and Neutrality: AI assistance should not compromise the core principles of Wikinews. Any biases identified in AI-generated suggestions must be addressed by contributors to ensure that the final article remains neutral and factually accurate.
