Welcome
TheFearow/Archive 1, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!
- Wikinews:Neutral point of view - tell every side to a story in a fair and balanced way
- Wikinews:Cite sources - everything in a Wikinews article must be sourced
Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:
- Wikinews:Introduction - overview of the site
- Wikinews:Writing an article - how to write and publish a complete article
- Wikinews:Content guide - what's suitable for Wikinews
- Wikinews:Contents - the contents page.
There are always things to do on Wikinews:
- Existing articles need expanding and checking for spelling and mistakes
- The front page lead articles often need updating
- Developing stories need finishing and publishing
- Discussions need your input
- Audio Wikinews could always use more contributors
- And of course, stories need writing!
By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! Ticker
Nice job on the ticker! I would suggest that it'd be a good idea to make the prefixed text ("Latest stories (update)" etc) and font sizes etc configurable. Thanks for creating this! -- IlyaHaykinson 00:42, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
- Interesting, I didn't notice the ids on the divs which make it all CSS-addressable. I like the version on your copy of the main page; let's see what others say about it. One little annoyance is that when you mouse-over the story it may want to postpone changing by another little bit: otherwise just as you mouse-over the ticker article the ticker changes and starts pointing to another article. I'd say that if there is a mousemove over the content div you should add a special 500-1000 millisecond wait after the whole line is rendered. -- IlyaHaykinson 00:54, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
- Nice, looking pretty good in my opinion. Though it's currently broken for me in IE7. -- IlyaHaykinson 01:06, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
- Two errors. 1) Line 571, char 1, "Wrong number of arguments or invalid property assignment". 2) L 43 char 2, "Object doesn't support this property or method". -- IlyaHaykinson 01:19, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
- And it doesn't display anything. -- IlyaHaykinson 01:20, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
- I wouldn't mind implementing if it came to this; the problem that I see is the IE error: until that error is gone I think we can't really push this side-wide. -- IlyaHaykinson 02:48, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
- I think that's fine; we can fix the IE portion later on. What _is_ the bug by the way? -- IlyaHaykinson 02:53, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
- I am personally ok with including the script in your page space. I can see other people objecting though. Let's try it and see what happens :-) -- IlyaHaykinson 03:02, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Ok, the ticker is in place. -- IlyaHaykinson 03:15, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
- I think the randomization of the ticker has a problem: it always randomizes, rather than just starting in a random place and then continuing in order. This means that sometimes you can watch the same headline appear many times in a row. -- IlyaHaykinson 06:22, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
- I noticed that people want their own tickers, i.e. not just latest news ones. What about changing it so that the default <div> is something like <div ... > <div style="display:none">{{localurl:Page to get with ticker contents}}</div></div>, so that you can find the div and then look inside of it for the URL to fetch. This will make the ticker even more flexible. -- IlyaHaykinson 07:07, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
RE: Syntax
Thanks for inform. Eric Wester 03:42, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
Hi
I'am Grimlock (bureaucrate and sysop on WN fr). I'd like to know if I can use for testing purpose (in a first time) your nice script (i.e. User:TheFearow/public/ticker.js). Of course, I would have to change small things (only translation). Thank you ! Grimlock 14:34, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
- Hello, I've proceeded to tries but I think I've made some mistakes (as you can see in my fr contributions list) ... I will strongly appreciate your help to insert this script in WN fr. Moreover, the other main users of the project agree with its use on fr. I hope to see you soon on fr ! Thank you in advance, Grimlock 06:30, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
- P.S. : DPL are activate on WN fr, as you can see on our main page.
Ok. Banner updated. Layout updated. Colour scheme nearly done. Articles to-do. Anything else? Reply to me or here, it's being watched. lol! Celticfan383 04:27, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
- Nope. I'll just keep doing minor changes :) TheFearow 05:31, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
- Do you like the snazzy banner? Heh! Celticfan383 06:56, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
fast for peace
Are you sure that thestory is ready? I just had a conversation with Jcart and he suggested that it was not ready...that I needed to be interviewed with an accredited journalist or someone from Wikinews that I wasnt allowed to post anything?.?Niacey 12:55, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Niacey
If I may jump in here, TheFearow. Here is an excerpt that was left on Niacey's Talk page on August 24: "Yes, Niacey, it was deleted. It went through a deletion request vote and consensus was that it did not conform to article standards. I think with your story, perhaps you might be best to request an inverview with an accredited wikinews reporter. Jcart1534 17:34, 24 August 2007 (UTC)" In addition, there was a more complete conversation here on my Talk page. After the article was deleted as a result of the Deletion Request process, Niacey has resurrected the article and is attempting to work with it. I have not spoken to him/her since, and most certainly never said he/she was not allowed to post anything. On the contrary, I have tried to provide some guidance, but will not be involved beyond what I have already done. Jcart1534 13:12, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Ticker again
Hello, all my tries did not work to insert the ticker in fr ... But I'm not a programming specialist. I hope to see you soon on fr WN ! Grimlock 06:34, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
- Hi again ! Thank you for coming on WN fr ! I think I will be more convenient - for the moment - that you give me the instructions you can not execute to make the ticker work on fr (such as the things you want to add in the Mediawiki:monobook.js, as an example). I did not manage to talk about a possible temporary sysoping with the other main contributors. By the way, thank you again Grimlock 10:55, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
- Your script is absolutly fantastic and work quite well on WN fr. I will ask for other contributors to include it in our Accueil. Thank you again. Grimlock 11:45, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
