Saw your comment on Sean Heron's user talk, and thought I'd add my welcome to Steven's above.

Good luck contributing to Wikinews, it can take a lot of getting used to if you're coming from Wikipedia. It is somewhat more anarchic and fast-paced. You are correct there is a tendency to allow the original author a degree of ownership over an article, but you should hop over here next time there's something like the London Bombings or Virginia Tech shootings.
