Welcome edit
PaulHanson, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!
- Wikinews:Neutral point of view - tell every side to a story in a fair and balanced way
- Wikinews:Cite sources - everything in a Wikinews article must be sourced
Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:
- Wikinews:Introduction - overview of the site
- Wikinews:Writing an article - how to write and publish a complete article
- Wikinews:Content guide - what's suitable for Wikinews
- Wikinews:Style guide - how articles should look before publishing
- Wikinews:Contents - the contents page.
There are always things to do on Wikinews:
- Existing articles need expanding and checking for spelling and mistakes
- The front page lead articles often need updating
- Developing stories need finishing and publishing
- Discussions need your input
- Audio Wikinews could always use more contributors
- And of course, stories need writing!
By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome!--Cspurrier 2 July 2005 14:14 (UTC)
Video production edit
Paul — I don't have very much experience with video production. I suggest that if you want to gain experience, try filming something very short and unrelated to the story you ultimately want to cover, in order to gain experience in doing it. For example, film a short story about something simple, like litter in the subway; interview a couple of people with different opinions, and write up an article to go with the video segment. Upload the video to the Commons, and post the article here, and in the process gain experience that will set you up for the transit strike story. You might also be able to get some pointers from ex-Wikinewsie David Vasquez. He's unfortunately no longer regularly contributing, so use the "Email this user" link on his user page to contact him. Good luck! -- IlyaHaykinson 07:14, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
- You might also be intreasted in Wikinews:Broadcast which isn't active curently (unfortunatly the person heading up the project left(David Vasquez) but he left on fairly good terms so he'll proably help you if you ask.) but there might be something there useful. Good luck. happy editing, and filming. Bawolff ☺☻ 07:25, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
New Wikinewsie edit
Hello. Thank you :) I am currently covering a somewhat breaking story: Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners. I am covering a meetig on the 21 of this month that is going to be a big event. This is causing quite an uproar. I would not be suprised if this made national headlines :) But you should always take notes, record quotes if you can and take your own pictures as well as your own work can be used on Wikinews. I am still new at Original reporting and this is my first major actual full fledged reporting. Good luck and let me know how everything goes. Keep in touch! Your account will be renamed edit
Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called PaulHanson. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name PaulHanson~enwikinews that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
