Wikimedia Radio edit
I'm seriously curious what could be drawn out of Wikispecies for radio use. I'd like to think a discussion about that on the talk of the WN:RADIO page might give people from other projects ideas on how they can do an audio presentation of their material. In trying to get an idea I looked up "Dog" on Wikispecies, what I see is a reference work where there is all the data to go look things up in Wikipedia, but too much Latin for you to draw in an average audience. What I see once redirected from Wikispecies page on Dogs, is all the cross-referencing information to make a documentary series on man's best friend, covering lots of interesting and not widely known facts. Does that belong on Wikispecies, Wikiversity, or Commons?
This, of course, may be due to the fact that I'm trying to make sure that any broadcasting remains highbrow and does not descend into talk radio flamefests. That means I'm looking at what I think are the best ways to turn existing content into something I believe people would tune in to. There was an aside when I pitched this idea to the WMF communications committee, that, for continuity, we wanted people with a "Radio 4" voice. It was suggested that the idea I was pitching was "WikiRadio4" and the point at which I said this just confirmed it for that person. I actually like that idea and find this a great standard to aim for. Read the WP article, it calls Radio 4 the BBC's flagship radio station without any commercial peer.
Where this differs wildly from what the BBC does now, and has done in the past, is the "audience participation". There really is nothing stopping anyone using this as an audition and recording their own version of the latest headlines, but there is always the option to create your own view based on existing material. --Brian McNeil / talk 22:54, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
