"How the News Makes Us Dumb"

If you only watch mainstream television news, or read mainstream newspapers or websites, I agree that one may end up being misinformed about what is really going on in the world.

But the notion that mainstream "news makes us dumb" is rather antiquated now that there are a multitude of other sources from which one can obtain a wider perspective of what is going on in the world.

The answer to corporate control of the mainstream news is not to bury your head in the sand and become even more ignorant, but to seek out additional sources of news.

If we can get past the mental blocks that are preventing Wikinews editors from performing any firsthand reporting, Wikinews can become one of those sources.

As for shelf life, and the desire to work on history on Wikipedia, I can only say that a lot of history is written using archived news sources as references. However, a lot of fish gets wrapped with old newspapers, so I sort of see your point. :)
