Just read your Hawaii article - a classic piece of Wikinews reporting. An interesting story that would never have made it here to the UK. Thanks and keep up the good work! Dan100 (Talk) 14:35, 31 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I don't know if I like that little synopsis I wrote, on the article you wrote, now at the 3rd lede. You can change the wording here if you like. Best regards. -Edbrown05 10:20, 1 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Updated it to reflect the importance...this is Waikiki Beach we're talking about, which is to Honolulu as the Eiffel Tower is to Paris. KeithH 19:43, 1 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

News briefs

edit

Hey, could I get you to add [[Category:Brief]] to the news briefs from now on? Otherwise, they get stuck in developing, and are out of place. Thanks! --MrMiscellanious (talk) – 23:05, 12 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sure, will do. Sorry 'bout that. KeithH 02:45, 13 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

great job!

Hi there User:KeithH, just wanted to say you're doing a great job with the newsbriefs! I recorded one myself yesterday, and much enjoyed the process. I've got a small recording studio and might just start doing Spoken Wikinews (full articles), as it seems you've got the Briefs mostly covered. I'd like to coordinate a little bit, if we can, that way we don't both end up recording the same news brief for a given day and duplicating each other's work. Let me know your thoughts. Dto1138 15:07, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

That would be great. You're doing a good job too and I'd appreciate the help. Maybe we can work out a schedule of some sort. When I get the chance I'll post something on the project talk page. KeithH 07:04, 17 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

You rawk and rewl! I just wanted to leave a note to let you know I am impressed with your writing. Karen 07:33, 24 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, being in the IWWC, I've been getting a lot of practice. Believe me, an article a day is hard work! Thanks! Aloha, KeithH (talk) 07:48, 24 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

You have a gift for words, better than that, it makes sense. I wonder some about this precedent that bill might make. What next?, cruise boats with exclusive and legal gambling rights, where other entrepreneurs are excluded... -Edbrown05 09:07, 13 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
I mean, we know far asians love to gamble, and that native american indian tribes have been granted special priviledges to conduct gambling enterprises within the continental US. Is anyone looking for special status here? -Edbrown05 09:16, 13 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Actually, the bill as it stands (at least as I understand it) prohibits a Native Hawaiian nation from instituting gambling (not that we'd really want it here anyway; there's always Las Vegas). The state and our congressional delegation are actually framing it more as a matter of gaining political parity, because...well, there's a reason why the only royal palace in the U.S. is in downtown Honolulu. The U.S. wiped an fully independent nation off the map when it annexed Hawaii in 1900. Read the Wikipedia article on Hawaii to learn more.

Plus, the U.S. and state governments and private entities have instituted programs benefiting Native Hawaiians, but as of late what few programs that Hawaiians can call their own are coming under attack. For instance, take the Kamehameha Schools, a private school started by a Hawaiian princess to help better the condition of Hawaiians through education. It has long given preference in admission to Native Hawaiians (which, admittedly, in practice has become Hawaiians-only because there are more qualified Hawaiians than there are spaces). Its admissions policy is being challenged in the courts. Such is the climate these days. (For the record, I'm NOT a Native Hawaiian; I'm a 100% Japanese-American born and bred here.) I wanted to let you know that I noted your reply here a couple days later after you posted it. At your suggestion, I did some light reading at the Hawaii link you provided above and did follow a few link threads from that reading.
I thought the juciest stuff is what you said right here, that "but as of late what few programs that Hawaiians can call their own are coming under attack." Thanks for that comment, what I thought was the most telling in relationship to the article you wrote.
I've found it difficult to make a transition from derivative writing to original writing here because because of a policy of citing sources. I'm not sure if that comment properly applies in reference to the article cited in my post, and I'm not really sure what I'm sayng, other than a freedom to inject a perspective into a story should somehow exist without having to resort to applying an 'Original reporting' tag or somehow have to defend the introduced material. -Edbrown05 04:46, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
I thought Tornadoes cause millions in damages in Waco, Texas was a really cool story for a very specific reason, it has no sources. -Edbrown05 04:53, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'm not advocating for the abandonment of sources, I suppose that I believe contributions to stories by persons with an intimate relationship of the subject should be allowed to introduce unique material that is unsourced, because there would be no source other than the common knowledge of those most affected by it. -Edbrown05 05:05, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
