Welcome
editCaptainjohann, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!
- Wikinews:Neutral point of view - tell every side to a story in a fair and balanced way
- Wikinews:Cite sources - everything in a Wikinews article must be sourced
Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:
- Wikinews:Introduction - overview of the site
- Wikinews:Writing an article - how to write and publish a complete article
- Wikinews:Content guide - what's suitable for Wikinews
- Wikinews:Contents - the contents page.
There are always things to do on Wikinews:
- Existing articles need expanding and checking for spelling and mistakes
- The front page lead articles often need updating
- Developing stories need finishing and publishing
- Discussions need your input
- If you're interested in audio recordings, Audio Wikinews could always use more contributers
- And of course, stories need writing!
By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! --Brian McNeil / talk 09:13, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
formatting comments and signing
edithi, just wanted to let you know that on the Mediawiki software that Wikinews runs on, it's not a good idea to begin a line of text with one or more blank spaces. beginning a long line with blank spaces will lead to run-on text that needs horizontal scrolling to follow, like so -
"beginning a long line with blank spaces will lead to run-on text that needs horizontal scrolling to follow."
the same line without the space is perfectly fine:
"beginning a long line with blank spaces will lead to run-on text that needs horizontal scrolling to follow."
also, u can "sign" ur comments in talk pages by rtyping 4 tildes (~~~~) which the software will automatically convert to the kind of signature u see at the end of this line. — Doldrums(talk) 11:01, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
- the 'tilde' key is the one to the left of the '1' key and above the 'Tab' key in the picture of a w:QWERTY keyboard. (u'll have to hold down the shift key and press the tilde key to enter it). 4 such tildes with no spaces between them will do the job. meantime, i'll add the the link u've given to the article. best — Doldrums(talk) 06:47, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
- looks like u've got the hang of it. :) — Doldrums(talk) 16:22, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

writing articles
edithi, thank you for your continuing interest in Wikinews. we appreciate your eforts to report on news from India. but the content in Condemned in Perpetuatity for marrying a christian! and the comment you added to it [1] are not really in line with Wikinews content guidelines at all. please note that articles should be written as a factual news report with no editorial commentary. Wikinews:Writing an article is a good place to start for learning how a Wikinews article can be developed. if you need any assistance with writing, pls don't hesitate to ask me on my talk page or on the Water cooler. best, –Doldrums(talk) 04:46, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
