Do you really think that it will make prisons safer? Who are you kiding with that vanilla retoric? Prisoners are going to smoke and this only creates another black market within prison walls. Drugs are considered "contraband" and that has not stopped anyone who really wants something from obtaining it. Health costs? What about the cost of a hospital visit to sew someone up who did not pay his "tobaco slip" to the houseman? As long as there are civilians working in prisons there will be tobaco and every other illicit drug imaginable. How do you think they get inside the walls in the first place? It is just one more excuse for the Department of Corrections to ask for funding. Second only to oranges, prisons are one of the biggest busineses in Florida. Good luck to all you unfortunate officers who have to deal with an angry inmate who just wants a cigarette. Also, good luck to all you unfortunate inmates who have to deal with an angry c.o. who only wants a cigarette.
